What factors should you consider when assigning roles in a product development team?

Skills and expertise of the resource; and most importantly, willingness to solve a problem. Domain knowledge and technical know hows are important, honestly those are the skills normally found in the resources. But sense of ownership is very crucial as a PM he/she needs to own the entire life cycle of the product.

First thing to do is acknowledge that not all members of your team will have similar skillset. Next, map the skill set with various features in your team's roadmap. For example, there might be a candidate who pays great detail to attention and invariably is slower given their zeal for perfection. You might want them to work on a mature product where the margin of error if things go wrong might be limited. On the other end, you might have someone who has great bias for action and is ready to experiment fast and fail fast. You might want them to work on early stage product where they can experiment a lot until they figure out what feature(s) helps making the charter a success.

In my experience, you should work with consultants that have experience with developments that employed similar technologies. Innovative products are "new." Find a technologically similar predicate device and find the team that has that type of experience in their portfolio.

IMHO for any product development role, key criteria to consider is the skill and expertise of the resource. These are the key differentiators. But there are other major factors to consider for, Interests and strengths: Consider the personal interests, passions, and strengths of team members when assigning roles. Team dynamics: Evaluate how team members work together and consider the overall dynamics of the team. Flexibility and adaptability: Recognize that roles within a product development team may need to evolve over time as the project progresses and priorities shift.

Product development team should have a sound knowledge on the customer need and latest technology to fulfil. we should consider PD team innovation skill too without it , they can find a break thru solution for market . Moreover PD should have well listening skill to absorb the circumstance to trigger new thoughts.

This is a great question. In my experience, product development is a challenge and forming a team never has all the skills or knowledge when beginning the project. Communication and collaboration is critical for any project involving more than 1 person. Its imperitive that grounds rules for communication and collaboration are defined at the beginning of the product development project. These rules should define 1. Team structure and clear definition of roles and responsibilities. 2. Clear definition of who is the 'D' in various situations. 3. Purpose and periodicity of meatings and the owner of every meeting. For cross functional team collaboration and communication, its advisable that there are single points of contact who facilitate the communication. This helps in overcoming ambiguity and confusion arising from multiple touch points between the teams.

I would put more emphasis on Trust ( communication & collaboration) than skillset. Great teams are built on Trust, skill sets are a give in - what makes a great place of work are synergies between people, helping each other.

Since product development most often happen in a team environment I think that communication is essential. Here I would like to point out respect as a key factor. Respect to ideas from others but as important is to challenge. By challenge in a respectful way you also gain trust which is important in a team environment.

Walk the miles. Make time for everyone to spend some time in other chairs from time to time. Devs need to hear real support calls. Design needs to see what the platform can actually do. And everyone needs to know how good JIRAs make the audit survivable. That time comes with a homework assignment. After every embed, ask "What can X do to make Y better?" Don't be afraid to invest a little X into Y -- you're all on the same team!

The IQ of a diverse positive working group will always surpass that of any one individual. So you want a positive working group not a dysfunctional one as many can be self-serving rather than project serving. As we don’t all see the world in the same way (a key part of how our brain filter is unique to us and connects the dots based on our experiences, good and bad, along with our prejudices), a diverse group provides the opportunity for wider perspectives than if the group is one of ‘birds of a feather flock together’. e.g, engineers will tend to have thinking and doing behavioural preferences (the reason they like that career). Adding other disciplines to the team will support thinking outside the box to find better performance delivery.

It is important to have someone in the team with critical thinking, to keep a check on the direction of the product strategy. While Diversity aims to handle this though different prespective of poeple in the team, sometime critique is overlooked in the name of collboration.

From a personal experience, Diversity is like multiple lenses available to teams. They get different perspectives and thoughts. This unlocks something they might have never thought. Inclusion - promotes team building and trust. When team members back each other, they work as one team - a well oiled unit.

Being open to new metaphors is the essence of teamwork. Acceptance of the diverse perspectives keeps the team forging ahead despite roadblocks.

Diversity is really important and I don't mean skin color or ethnicity. Different viewpoints and experiences are critical. It is easy to view everything from the manufacturer's point of view. But did you cover the many different customer viewpoints or different international markets? Did you examine the history and different similar views? One person cannot cover it all.

With that being said, from a business perspective, you need to have a target user / customer base that you will eventually market your product to and need to take that into consideration.

The obvious choice in assigning team members is "what are they good at", which fits into the Skills area. But it's very important to include "what are they interested in" as an additional consideration. To broaden the team's capabilities, people need to cross train but we also need to make sure our team members needs are met for their personal development. Giving assignments that are slightly outside of a typical skill set are often motivators for team members who are looking for new opportunities to learn, network, and chart their professional course. We build better teams and more loyal employees by understanding that we owe them opportunities to keep them motivated and foster their potential.

This aspect is totally dependent on whether you are a manager or a leader. There is a distinct difference in the mindset of both and how it translates to Motivation and engagement. Managers drive the time line - Leaders provide the width to explore, learn and support their teams towards achieving goals. For those who truly have the hunger to grow find leaders to work with than managers.

Expertise is important however genuine interest, passion and curiosity are the true driving forces for engagement. The ability to see the bigger picture behind any product development can ignite motivation and energy. “Follow your passion” principle generates more results than any “must do”.

Without the right engagement it’s easy to demotivate others, I.e. engagement is key for success in this area. Positive attitude and respect vs team members creates motivation for others!

If there is any problem with motivation and engagement, it is best to cut that person loose quickly. It is the most humane thing to do for that employee because it may change their life. It is the act of a wise shepherd to remove anything harmful to the herd.

I find motivation to be more impactful than skillset once a product manager has a number of years experience or achieved a higher level role. I relate it to coaching youth sports- I would rather coach a kid to stay in their lane vs having to motivate them to continue down the road.

Best Product Managers are not the ones who push every request, but those who adapt to their surrounding while staying true to their product vision.

Having worked most of my life for startups and small companies, that work for bigger companies or build consumer services, it has been always a challenge to adapt. Foster a culture where change is OK. But at the same time, try to shield people from it. Too much of it and it will bring morale and sense of completion down.

A very critical aspect. As you develop your product, you will see that many assumptions change because, in the beginning, you didn't know what you learned later in your voyage of discovery. You may have to modify goals because your initial assumptions were invalid.

Development and innovation management is a lot about trial and error. Requirements can change easily, the results are not as expected or the idea seems to be not the right one. Give up? Never! The mindset of your team should be: this is just a short road block. Let`s work on it and see how to overcome and create something even better.

people's cultural alignment(background/affinity) is counterproductive as geographies shrink and diverse cultural backgrounds are better towards the process. Alignment with Vision & mission is critical - yes in terms of corporate culture. Whereas bringing in people from wider cultural backgrounds bring value.

Seems like there is some misunderstanding about what "Culture" means in this context. This is not about the culture that comes from your upbringing, your country. The culture here as a common understanding of how product development as a whole should be done. For example, people who don't understand product development's agile nature will clash with those who do. Same goes about values - those are not necessarily about human values - the assumption here is that most of the people would share similar "common values", but if we are talking about product development specifically, then it is important to be in sync about things like customer centricity, or scientific approach. The system of beliefs is the first thing you should address.

Cultural differences are always there in all departments especially when it comes to remote work. Product Development team culture and values needs to be defined according to the best practices followed in successful and in dynamic culture Organizations. Because each culture is different to work with but Product Development team should be adaptable and welcoming to change.

I would certainly take into account the creativity and out of the box thinking capabilities of team members and assign roles accordingly. In simple terms- Knowledge, Skill and Attitude. -Knowledge involves subject expertise or potential interest, with a passion for ‘deep dives’’. -Skill involves a blend of hard and soft work skills, per need. -Attitude could relate to behavioral aspects personal ethics, values, positive energy, team spirit, an ability to learn, & train product users or teams. Be realistic. ‘Variety is the spice of life’ when it comes to product development, so do not discount ‘team diversity’, as well as ‘dynamic hierarchy’. Time is the major essence of product development, that provides the ‘competitive advantage’.

Often overlooked is how well you know each member of your team. The leader should always understand that each individual has their own set of characters, styles, way of doing/talking/designing/etc., and it's the delegator's role to maximize how these behaviors affect or connect with others. This is not merely by optimizing their strenghts, rather, how each strengths can complement what other members lack in order to have better product output.

All good suggestions, but they all miss a critical skill; and probably the #1 skill. The person must intimately understand the end user so the product fully satisfies user needs for the intended application of the product. A well engineered product is no good if users don’t like/benefit from it.

Hemispheric dominance is so often overlooked yet it is vital to building a Team that lasts. The best: putting those good at nebulous things on the challenges that need creative definition and solutions. And putting those good at analyzing on tasks that require logical solutions. Unfortunately one can't always put the right people on the right job. In that case, those in leadership roles must be prepared to help the Team manage the additional stress introduced by having to put the wrong types of people on the wrong types of tasks. It's an opportunity for growth, learning and becoming more than they started with but it will also be stressful and require guidance. Properly managed this helps build a Team with depth and uncommon strength.

All factors are equally important ,but if you don’t have VISION all other factors are not important.R&D manager should be visionar. Hard working without vision is just Sisyphus work.

The best team members will be positive and have an open mind with an anything can be accomplished mentality if we put our minds to it.... If someone is constantly negative on the team, putting down ideas, or coming up with excuse after excuse why something isn't possible, they shouldn't be working in product development or in innovation in general. Leadership should be conscientious of these team members and have an overall read of the team with check-ins. Consistently negative team members should be removed from the project as they can be a cancer to the team and prevent them from meeting the objectives.
