On this topic, I want to apply the 5 whys method. Ask 5 times "Why" on the criticism, and you will get to the bottom of the real truth about the client's concern and fear of objection. A crisis I'm is a way to say, "I am uncomfortable with this and don't know how to manage." Be empathic, and you will gain trust and respect.

When working with a self-critical client, I focus on shifting attention from perceived shortcomings to strengths and growth. I acknowledge their feelings without letting them spiral into negativity. Encouraging reflection on past successes, however small, helps celebrate progress. Together, we set realistic goals, breaking them down into manageable steps to make the journey less overwhelming. With reassurance, they see that failure is part of the process. It’s about transforming “I’m not good enough” into “I’m learning and growing.” When setbacks become stepping stones, self-criticism fades and confidence flourishes, as they realize the path forward is built on resilience, not perfection.

When I work with overly self-critical client, I try to find out, where this pattern sterns from. Probably from childhood as a result of internalized critical "parent voice". Then we evaluate, how this pattern serves my client at the moment, what are the positives and what are the negatives. And lastly we look for ways, how to challenge this approach and how to start shifting mindset towards strengths and self-worth.

I would focus the coaching on enhancing his/her self worth. Digging deep into the reasons for self- criticism, inner child work and supporting strengths and talents, can help immensely to let go of strong self-criticism .

I try to shift their perspectives and encourage them to retrospect on past successes and reconsider challenges as learning opportunities. I try to make feedback more actionable and empowering. I also sometimes share my own experiences about overcoming self-doubt. I found that such strategies helped create a supportive coaching environment and over time, they embraced feedback as a growth tool and self-sabotage through self-criticism.

Ask client directly: Ask that judgy part, "What does she needs right now?" If you're not saying things like "...Repeat their exact words..." to yourself, what are you worried will happen?
