I used to say, "you need to reinvent yourself every 5 years to maintain relevance". Change is so rapid now, it can feel difficult to keep up. Review the skills you have and look at how they can be applied to or make use of AI to increase productivity. Some big drivers are Data Science, Legal, full stack development and security. Look for what is of interest to you and the courses available, that can help you develop them into a current offering. AI itself can be your friend in developing your skills. Look into prompt crafting to get better answers to the questions you have around skill development.

AI is a game changer, lot of professionals are seeking path to transition into the new hybrid AI-human work model. It is powerful and can make a huge difference to your output - but it requires a lot of input in terms of learning how to navigate and prompt. It also takes experience to understand how to find the balance between efficiency and quality, where AI tends to do far better on the former at the moment. Apply yourself in your domain to narrow down on AI as a skill there, don't just learn general AI applications as it may leave you unfocused.

Learn about the boundary conditions of the particular technology. What kinds of problems does it solve well now? What kinds of problems is it not well-suited for? What domains might benefit from the AI solution in the future? What kinds of AI are there? Is it a classification, a generative, or a pattern recognition problem? How are your customers solving this problem today, before you apply any AI?

This is key. I made a mid-career transition to AI and had challenges. There is a lot of pressure to "stay in your lane" when mid-career. To overcome this, you need to get out there and talk to people. Show them your knowledge, but equally or more importantly, show them your passion. The world still works around "who you know" - get to know more people in AI, and job opportunities will open up. There is a plethora of conferences, meetups, and online AI events. Attend them - in particular, in-person events. And don't forget that posting online on sites like LinkedIn is a way to show your knowledge and passion and get noticed to be invited to in-person events.

Networking was a key part of achieving my mid-career pivot, not only in making new connections in the AI space that helped me to identify potential job opportunities, but also in helping me see that the mid-career pivot into AI is achievable, especially in a more applied role than a technical role. When networking, be specific in who you reach out to, make sure you've done some background reading on them and be clear about why you're contacting them, what you can offer them and what you hope to gain from the conversation.

It’s a great step to have your own sources of learning which are accurate, digestible and at the right level for you. These can include verified websites such as the UNESCO Global Observatory, The Alan Turning Institute, The Institute of Analytics, and connecting with the right people and professional networks on LinkedIn. Many of the tech companies who provide the largest LLMs, such as OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google, have invested a huge amount of time and money in free resources which you can readily access. I enjoy using LLMs themselves as a personal coach, teacher, and tutor, I find it one of the most accessible and easiest ways to use AI and one of the best ways to stay up to date with exactly what I need.

It is often said that networking is all about giving. You need to be open and ready to help others. Whether on LinkedIn, in the office, among friends, or at networking events, plan to actively participate and initially offer help. Volunteer, and you'll find that the people you meet are often eager to reciprocate, helping you find a new assignment, a new job, or just offering a quick chat.

This is the most disruptive domain and engineers with less than a year experience receive sound boost in compensation if moving on between the short projects execution. Just make sure to not be jumpy and set clear expectations with your employers! Reputation is everything!

I successfully transitioned from an enterprise architect specializing in retail tech to AI by networking. And one of the most successful ways was entering and winning a hackathon (personal experience). Hackathons can be a sort of job interview, and many companies that run them are interested in the winners. Go do it! Obviously, winning is the best, but just entering is a way to show your stuff, to flex and to have something to show perspective employers.

Right now, AI investors should be guarded in what types of infrastructures they are choosing to allocate their investments towards. One of the biggest challenges I have continued to see with many of these “overnight” decisions by companies to enter into the AI arena is that it’s forced. Similar to other emerging technologies, such as the Blockchain, is that not every currently existing infrastructure is ready for AI integration — yet. Unfortunately, we’ve seen an influx of this “keeping up with the Joneses” from companies in trying to remain competitive and attractive in their markets. Don’t force it.

Be prepared for a learning curve and embrace it as an opportunity to grow. AI is rapidly evolving, so flexibility and a growth mindset are key.
