This serves a couple advantages no other medium has. 1) It allows you to build a one on one relationship with the network contact so they get to know you and you know them simultaneously. 2) You get to instantly discuss next steps after a relatively short time. Another tip in building what I call true networks is having access via most conference apps the ability to laser focus your connection. Connecting with people ahead of time via conference apps is also a great way to get communication going prior to the conference date. As the saying goes it's not what you know it's who you know. So building your network is key.

I agree but if you are an individual angel in most cases a larger investor will dictate the terms of the round. If you have expertise in the area of the startup’s focus you may be able to negotiate advisor shares as part of the investment. If that is the case, .01% to 1% equity is the typical range depending on the stage of the company and your perceived seniority in the space.

I feel prior to getting to this stage you need to build a foundation based on what I call the Investor 4 relationship languages. Trust, Respect, Boundaries, and Open communication. Build a portfolio to spread your risk. Startups are a great but risky asset class. In order to offset the ones that fail, you need some to do (really) well. Rather invest in 20 companies than in one or two. And save some cash for a potential follow on round.

I think the key is to know the substance behind why you’re investing. In general, anything that solves a big enough problem is probably going to generate substantial financial success. At the end of the day, if I don’t think the problem that the start up is solving is big enough, then I would choose to pass on the investment. As we all know here most investments are heavily placed on the founder/investor prior to the idea. Ideas are great but if you don't have a founder that is capable of executing none of us here will invest. I have found spending time outside a board room with a founder reveals so much about the founder that can only be uncovered in a social setting. I highly recommend investors meet with founders for an extended period of time prior to investing. Find out where they are speaking next, see how they engage with others, see how people gravitate towards them and their business in the real world. My advice attend a conference with a founder prior to investing. You will learn a ton.
