How can you maintain investor alignment with your business goals?

It is said that "communication is the lifeline of any relationship". It is important to appreciate that investors are accountable to their contributors, and therefore they are bound to be more concerned about not just strategic decisions but also day to day affairs of the company. Their reputation is always at stake! Once we understand their role, it becomes easy to deal with their concern. So in my opinion the golden rule is avoid "any surprise". Keep them regularly informed about performance, issues and risks. And actually involve them in the process of decision making. Once the investors are convinced that nothing is hidden from them and that they are part of the same team they would go that extra mile to support.

It's also vital to foster a two-way dialogue with your investors. Encouraging them to provide feedback and insights can be incredibly valuable. This not only deepens their engagement with your business but also leverages their experience and networks. Furthermore, tailoring the communication style to suit different investors – recognizing that some may prefer detailed reports while others might favor quick, high-level summaries – can enhance the effectiveness of your communication. Lastly, don't overlook the power of informal updates; sometimes a brief, casual conversation can be just as impactful as a formal report in maintaining a strong and healthy investor relationship.

Being proactive and transparent in your communication is key. Some of your moves may be simple to understand and show immediate profit and others may be longer term and more complicated. Sharing your goals proactively and ensuring all invested parties are on the same page will result in the smoothest possible outcome.

I believe in any situation, business or personal, communication is paramount. If you are consistently having two way communications, and being transparent, you will be much better aligned on the current state of the business and better identify the next best moves to make to achieve your longer term goals. Provide feedback monthly in an executive summary document, outlining the achievements and obstacles for the month along with your high level financials. This goes for investors and also your management team and support staff. Sometimes the best ideas come from the staff working day to day on your products or delivering your services. The more you share with your team/investors, the better they can assist in achieving the Vision.

In my experience, candor and transparency are strong tools for maintaining alignment. Spreading good news is easy, don't back away from articulating the bad along with a plan to resolve the issues. Gratitude and margin are the two watchwords when dealing with donors, People understand without the resources there is no mission, but it is important to express a deep and sincere appreciation and gratitude for the gifts that people are giving. Relatable storytelling inspires engagement, but most donors want to be appreciated for what they're doing. Focusing on the mission, not the politics. Alignment with your donors is as important as alignment with your board. Balance both! Be a Compassionate and courageous leader.

When I raised venture capital from Techstars, Peterson Ventures, Kickstart Seed fund and a couple rockstar angels - their goal was to get a 10x+ return on their capital - it was pretty clear upfront, that is why they were investing - it was also an element of wanting to join what could be the next big thing - To align with your investors and crush your business goals - open communication is KEY. There are times where as an entrepreneur you may find that you need to take the long route to position yourself better than the quick fix to get the buck - keep that dialogue clearly open with your investors so they know your plan - You are playing chess out there, your investors should know your next 2-3 moves before you make them.

Investors are looking for return, plain and simple. Your business goals should included growing revenue which in turn will be in line with what your investors are looking for.

Always plan the investment strategies as if you were the investor. In other words don’t develop strategies that you would not be willing to participate in.

As someone who is board governance certified I understand how challenging it can be to balance shareholder value with company purpose and planet amelioration. Investors have traditionally been older and hence old school in thinking. Its good to see a younger generation of investors emerge and some of the older generation open to change. Also, at the same time, the startup can safeguard investor interest by putting in place the following: 1. Investor alignment is a must. But, more than that both founders and investors have to align with customers goals and value streams. Having transparency in roadmap and common alignment with customer’s value streams will make investors not only believe but pitch in with all their resources and network.

It’s not all about the money. Aligning on vision and values is #1 for me. Second is clarity. clarifying roles, responsibilities, and expectations - better defined as who is accountable for what. Entrepreneurs need to surround themselves with advisors and mentors who share their vision as much as they need to share their money. Having funding partners who buy into the culture and provide mentorship can be a recipe for liftoff 🚀

This is critical to do before the money has even come across. Don't take money that isn't aligned with the short term goals as well as long term vision. It is key that your investors are a good "match" to the company's culture and values. This is the one piece that is not likely to change over time; its foundation. All other parts of this puzzle may evolve over time, but when you are aligned at the core of what makes your company what it is, it is easier to make decisions as a team. You do not want your investors to run with your business if you are hired to do so. That is why having a clear shareholders agreement with a delegation of authority stating which matters can be approved by a CEO/MD and which matters requires approval from a Board of Directors is key to have an agile decision making process and avoid burocracy. Remember: nobody knows more about the business than the person that is running full time with it.

We've used alternative funding to help startup founders not in software startups sell their startup at 18 months at almost one billion dollars. Consider keeping equity, selling less and using alternative funding instead. A billion dollar exit when you own 100% is better than when you only own 8%.
