Sharing Paul Yee's essay: I Was Born Here and I Am an American
“I was born here. I am an American.” “Are you sure you were born here? I don’t think so, bitch.” My wife, Margaret, recounted this disturbing incident to me. On a recent tour of San Francisco’s Chinatown, where she is a docent, Margaret was telling the story of Wong Kim Ark. Born in the U.S., Wong was barred reentry into the country in 1894, his citizenship challenged because he was the child of Chinese immigrants. After Wong sued, the Supreme Court ruled in his favor, concluding that birthright citizenship was guaranteed under the Fourteenth Amendment. As Margaret channeled Wong’s seemingly obvious yet fundamental argument—“I was born here. I am an American”—an older white man walked by and screamed the expletive at her. Saddened and angry, I feel helpless. My instinct is to store the hurt away and move on. Fortunately, I have both a wife and son, Sam, who are well versed in Asian American history. Sam majored in the subject and plans to teach ethnic studies in high school. As I write in my essay, I come to feel a deep connection to Wong as my family shares details about his life. Like my father, his parents hailed from Taishan in southern China. A century may separate the two of us, but I’m an American citizen today as a direct result of his brave fight. Although Wong won his case, he ultimately moved to China, tired of being harassed and defending his place in America. My family inspires me to embrace my heritage, which I long shunned growing up, and to amplify stories, whether they be Wong Kim Ark’s or Margaret’s. Most of all, I promise to raise my voice so people hear me loud and clear: Unlike Wong Kim Ark, we’re not going back to China. This is our country. We belong. We were born here. We are Americans. We must say it again, again, and again.
