About us
A Better Chicago is a venture philanthropy fund devoted to dramatically improving educational opportunities for low-income students. We invest in a select portfolio of high performing nonprofits that are putting low-income students on a path toward high school and college success. By providing our grantees with both significant funding and management support (such as business planning, leadership development and legal assistance), A Better Chicago is empowering Chicago’s most effective nonprofits to scale and meet the need for better educational options for our city and region.

We are proud to welcome Rush Education and Career Hub (REACH) as one of our new portfolio organizations! REACH is designed to promote health equity and workforce development by offering educational pathways for historically marginalized youth. They provide students from Chicago’s West Side with foundational healthcare knowledge, hands-on paid internships, and industry-recognized certifications. Why did we invest? To help the program grow to reach over 1,500 students by 2030, ensuring more young people from historically marginalized communities are prepared to succeed in post-secondary education and career.

Over the next few days, we’ll be introducing you to our three newest portfolio organizations, starting with Project OneTen. Founded in 2018, Project OneTen is a mentorship program designed to support Black and Latinx students who often don’t receive the academic and emotional support they need to excel. The program prioritizes relationship-driven support, addressing an opportunity gap that disproportionately impacts students of color in Chicago. Why did A Better Chicago Invest? To support the program’s holistic model, which has proven effective in boosting freshman-on-track rates and increasing high school graduation outcomes.
