Ben Scharfe CPA, EVP, AI, shares his thoughts on the role of regulation as #AI takes off across healthcare following an insightful panel discussion at #HIMSS25 featuring Leigh C. Burchell, VP of Policy and Public Affairs, with fellow leaders from the Electronic Health Record Association:
Fantastic work by Leigh C. Burchell of Altera Digital Health, Tina Joros, Stephen Speicher, M.D., M.S., and Stephanie Jamison, MPA, last week at #HIMSS25. This group has been doing phenomenal work as part of the Electronic Health Record Association, to advocate on behalf of our industry and to make regulations and legislation more understandable. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to attend their illuminating session last week as HIMSS wrapped up. It's not often that I find myself advocating for increased regulation. However, the session illuminated the critical importance of establishing comprehensive federal legislation for AI in healthcare. In the absence of such unified guidelines, we are witnessing a fragmented landscape where individual states implement their own regulations. This patchwork approach creates significant challenges for both users and vendors of AI technologies, leading to confusion and hindering the seamless adoption and advancement of AI solutions in a compliant manner. Federal regulation would provide the much-needed clarity and consistency, fostering an environment where innovation can thrive within well-defined boundaries. In navigating this complex regulatory environment, organizations like the Electronic Health Record Association (EHRA) play a pivotal role. By aggregating and summarizing legislation, these bodies develop frameworks that distill intricate regulatory information into actionable insights. Such resources are invaluable for stakeholders striving to implement AI responsibly and effectively within the healthcare sector. Further, these organizations advocate on behalf of all of the industry for clarity and practicality in regulation. I encourage fellow AI vendors and users to actively engage with organizations like the EHRA. By leveraging these resources, we can collectively navigate the evolving legislative landscape, ensuring that our AI implementations are both innovative and compliant. Embracing comprehensive federal regulation is not about stifling innovation; rather, it's about creating a stable foundation upon which AI can flourish, ultimately enhancing patient care and outcomes in the healthcare industry.
