As a healthcare technologist, it’s my job to keep up with wider technology trends and fast paced innovation that might help us with our mission to cure complexity in healthcare and solve real problems for our customers. The generative AI space has been on a tear, and recently an upstart Chinese company named DeepSeek has been pushing the limits of this space, achieving advanced performance levels that are also far more cost-effective than our current generative AI models. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞? You might have heard of a concept of Moore’s Law, which posits that computing power doubles approximately every two years. Greater power, especially when paired with a lower “bar” of entry from a cost and resourcing perspective, is a recipe for democratization of powerful technologies that can have a massive impact on even the smallest of companies. Simply consider that the smartphone in your pocket is more powerful than generations of desktop computers. DeepSeek’s advancements in the industry align well with Moore’s Law. As DeepSeek and other industry peers continue to leverage this exponential growth in processing capabilities, the potential impact it can have in healthcare is clear. Healthcare is an industry with vast amounts of data, lots of untapped potential, yet uneven distribution of resources that means big health systems get more access to the breakthrough technologies. This democratization of generative AI capabilities means a wide-open playing field for innovation, collaboration, and new use cases that go far beyond patient response drafting or ambient listening. I’m personally excited about how these rapid innovations will extend beyond what happens within the 4 walls of a practice, significantly enhancing the patient experience. Conversational AI is at the forefront of this transformation, offering support in areas such as appointment scheduling, patient education, chronic disease management, and potentially much more!
