Big congrats to Merge Records on 35 years! Not to over simplify things, but I've always admired how Merge treated music as, first and foremost, art to be shared and celebrated. Every album they've released is connected by a consistent thread of artist-driven integrity. Stating the obvious here, but that means maximizing commercial viability has not been the focus. Taking that approach is never easy in an industry dominated by mega-corporate syndicates. Merge's independent work ethic inspires us, and to help them celebrate 35 years, we created a new collaborative peanut butter we're calling Durham Summer, inspired by Merge's hometown and the place where Big Spoon Roasters began. ⁠ Figs! If you've spent much time in Durham during the summer, you might have noticed that there are giant fig trees everywhere. Summer in Durham is basically heaven for birds, squirrels, and fig foragers of all shapes and sizes. This collaboration peanut butter offers the perfect balance of ballpark-roasty High Oleic Runner peanuts, naturally sweet dried figs, raw Organic wildflower honey, and Jacobsen sea salt for a super-chunky texture you’ll want to spoon all day long. We love it spread, thickly, on fresh apple slices, stirred into overnight oats, on any PB&J, and in fat scoops right out of jar. It also pairs beautifully with Superchunk’s “On the Mouth,” Hiss Golden Messenger’s “Jump for Joy,” and H.C. A few years ago at Big Spoon Roasters, we started a project to introduce some of our R&D nut butter recipes to customers who might be interested in trying exploratory culinary directions. These were recipes that pushed the idea of "nut butter" even further than we had before. They were also unproven concepts without a known market. We started an "R&D Club" so folks could subscribe and get one of these nut butters mailed to their door - without knowing what it would be - every few months. If you were not in the club, you could not get the nut butter. The first R&D Club batches were TINY, even by our small-batch standards, but the list of recipients grew and grew. In fact, the program grew so much that we could not manage it as a subscription any longer, so we started making more of these R&D batches and launching them as online-only, first-come-first-served surprise drops about once a quarter. They usually sell out in a matter of hours, which is amazing and support for which we are incredibly grateful. A few of these R&D batches were so beloved, we've received almost daily requests to bring them back. One such nut butter is Bananas Foster Peanut & Almond Butter, which seemed to hit every person who bought it right in the pleasure center. So, it's been incredibly fun to re-release Bananas Foster as part of our quarterly Limited Batch nut butter series, which makes it available not only our website, but also to our direct wholesale customers. Please forgive the baseball analogy, but we're in Durham Bulls Baseball Club country, and it feels like Bananas Foster has just been called up to Triple-A. Inspired by the legendary New Orleans dessert with the same name, our Limited Batch Bananas Foster Peanut & Cashew Butter is handmade with fresh-roasted High Oleic Runner peanuts, Organic cashews, bananas, Kill Devil Rum from Outer Banks Distilling, Organic maple syrup, Organic coconut nectar, Red Ape Cinnamon, vanilla, and Jacobsen sea salt. Oven-toasted nuts perfectly complement the comforting flavor profile of this famously rich, boozy dessert. We also made it vegan and without refined sugar, just for you. As usual, we make this recipe with whole ingredients and no palm oil, hydrogenated oils, or "natural flavors." Rest assured, Bananas Foster lovers, this Limited Batch will be available through the end of September (or very close to it, while supplies last).
