Powering Europe’s Battery Future : Why BIG LEAP Matters? Batteries are a cornerstone of the clean-energy transition. Their role in the automotive and energy storage sectors is undeniable. With demand rapidly growing, Europe must stay ahead with smart, scalable, and sustainable solutions. But there's a challenge: while first-life batteries (FLBs) power electric vehicles efficiently, their reconfiguration into second-life batteries (SLBs) for energy storage is still costly, time-consuming, and non-standardized. This is largely due to the lack of interoperability in Battery Management Systems (BMS). ⚡️ Enter the BIG LEAP Project, funded under Horizon Europe and designed to unlock the full potential of SLBs by creating: ✅ A breakthrough three-layer BMS architecture for interoperability, safety, and reliability ✅ An adaptable Energy Storage System (ESS) that integrates seamlessly with repurposed batteries ✅ A cost-effective and standardized reconfiguration process for faster SLB deployment ✅ Advanced tools: SoX algorithms, a digital twin for real-time monitoring, and a standardization roadmap 🌍 The result? 🔋 Introducing the BIG LEAP Project Coordinator: BRING We are pleased to introduce the Brussels Research and Innovation Center for Green Technologies (BRING) as the coordinator of the BIG LEAP project. BRING is a non-profit organisation committed to advancing green and sustainable technologies, with expertise in energy storage systems for electric vehicles, vessels, and utility-scale applications. As coordinator of BIG LEAP — a Horizon Europe initiative focused on improving the reliability of second-life batteries (SLBs) — BRING plays a key role in leading the development of a novel, three-layer Battery Management System (BMS) architecture tailored to SLBs. The project also integrates an adaptable Energy Storage System (ESS) to support safe and efficient use from first-life to second-life battery applications. With BRING’s guidance, BIG LEAP aims to overcome interoperability challenges and support the sustainable reuse of batteries across Europe. 🎉 Celebrating One Year of the BIG LEAP Project! 🚀 On January 28th and 29th, the BIG LEAP consortium gathered for our General Assembly, marking one year of innovation, collaboration, and progress. Over two days, we: ✅ Presented key results from our first year ✅ Shared updates across all project areas ✅ Discussed strategies for the year ahead This meeting was a valuable opportunity to reflect on our achievements, address upcoming challenges, and collaborate on innovative solutions that will drive the future of energy storage and sustainability.
