A study published in JAMA, reveals major strides in the number of California emergency department clinicians prescribing buprenorphine — a medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) — and patients sustained in care. Congrats to authors Annette Dekker, MD, MS; David Schriger, MD, MPH; Andrew Herring, MD; and Liz Samuels, MD, MPH, MHS! 🌟In Herring’s words: “To observe that for every nine patients who start buprenorphine treatment in an emergency department, one achieves six months of continuous treatment within the next year is simply remarkable. "ED-based reproductive healthcare stands at the forefront of reproductive health and rights in this country," write Elizabeth Keating and Dr. Kelly Quinley with PHI's Access Bridge. "As ob-gyns grow scarce, ED providers need tools and support to provide evidence-based reproductive healthcare and change the clinical culture to scale this practice change. This can be the difference between life and death." In Nonprofit Quarterly, they explain how the Access Bridge model enables ED clinicians to deploy ED-specific protocols and training on miscarriage, contraception, emergency contraception, ectopic pregnancy, and medication abortion, equipping clinicians to partner with patients to ensure the right care is delivered in the ED, centering patients and clinicians throughout the process while clarifying clinical decision-making in confusing or threatening legal landscapes.
