Our mission is to provide public access to the political process. C-SPAN receives no government funding; operations are funded by fees paid by cable and satellite affiliates who carry C-SPAN programming.

  • C-SPAN announces the winners of the 2025 StudentCam documentary competition, in which nearly 3,500 students from around the country participated. This year, 150 cash prizes totaling $100,000 will be awarded to students and teachers. The competition, now in its 21st year, asked students to explore and analyze matters of personal, local or national importance by addressing this year’s theme — “Your Message to the President: What issue is most important to you or your community?” The 2025 grand-prize winner is Dermott Foley, a student at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. Dermott will receive $5,000 for the documentary, “Teens, Social Media, & the Fentanyl Overdose Crisis.” Daniel Aasa, a student at Winslow Township High School in Atco, New Jersey will receive $3,000 as a first-prize winner in the High School East region for the documentary, “Saving Sudan: U.S. Aiding in a Forgotten Crisis.” Benjamin Kurian, a student at Olentangy Liberty High School in Powell, Ohio, will receive $3,000 as a first-prize winner in the High School Central region for the documentary, “The Road to Vision Zero,” about using artificial intelligence to enhance road safety. Three anonymous students in California — where C-SPAN is available through Comcast — will receive $3,000 as first-prize winners in the High School West region for the documentary, “No Sanctuary: Addressing Transnational Repression in the Next Four Years.” Sofia Ou, Eva Ingram and Eliana Wei, students at Eastern Middle School in Silver Spring, Maryland, are national first-prize winners in the Middle School division and will receive $3,000 for the documentary, “One Party, Two Party, Red Party, Blue Party. The tagline reflects what's new in America in 2025: A new presidency, a new Congress, a new moment in politics -- plus C-SPAN’s enduring commitment to transparency and the belief that an informed public is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy.

    C-SPAN is a 2024 "brand that matters" honoree - being recognized by Fast Company - for its government coverage on TikTok. Fast Company notes, "the 45-year-old network gives viewers a raw look at the process of governance without talking heads or pundits, and viewers can still call in to share their opinions live on air." In 2023, 37 C-SPAN TikTok videos had over a million views. So far in 2024, 68 C-SPAN videos on TikTok have over a million views. C-SPAN 2024 TikTok posts have 400 million total views, 3.1 million comments, and 2.1 million shares. Nearly half of C-SPAN TikTok viewers are under the age of 35; two-thirds under the age of 45. According to Fast Company, "On TikTok, its refreshingly straightforward coverage of a particularly dramatic election cycle helped C-SPAN double its follower count between January and October 2024 to more than 1.4 million followers."     Cablefax's 2024 Diversity List is out and C-SPAN Executive Producer Paul Brown is among the honorees. Congratulations Paul on being recognized as one of the most influential multi-ethnic executives in the industry. "Brown has been a key figure behind some of C-SPAN’s most impactful coverage, leading efforts to capture historic moments like the extended debate to elect a new House Speaker, multiple impeachment hearings and high-profile trials. Brown has pushed the boundaries of traditional broadcasting by introducing new approaches, such as expanding primetime call-in programs and utilizing smartphone footage for real-time event coverage.
