New Energy Vision Report: The Best Path to Cleaner, Healthier Communities? Ditching Old Diesel Trucks! The 2.4 million heavy-duty diesel trucks built before 2013 are the most polluting vehicles on U.S. roads. They release toxic emissions that harm public health - especially in communities near highways and warehouses. It’s time for a change. But what’s the best alternative? Energy Vision’s latest report, A Path to a Healthier America: Ditching Old Diesel Trucks, dives deep into the options for replacing these outdated vehicles. We assessed renewable diesel (RD), battery electric (EVs), and renewable natural gas (RNG) trucks based on air pollutant reductions, health benefits, costs, availability, performance, and lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions. Key Findings: New RNG-powered trucks deliver 88% of the health benefits of EVs from lower air pollution but at a fraction of the cost. Switching to RNG trucks would save $10.2 billion or more in fuel costs over 15 years relative to diesel. Heavy-duty electric trucks are extremely expensive, have very limited availability, don't perform as well, and require expensive charging infrastructure. RD is a more sustainable alternative to petroleum diesel but offers lower air pollution reductions and health benefits than RNG or EVs. The conclusion? RNG-powered trucks are the most cost-effective and scalable way to counter the scourge of pollution from old diesel trucks today. By replacing just 130,000 of the oldest diesel trucks, we could prevent over 100 premature deaths, 230 ER visits, and 660 new asthma cases annually - saving $2 billion in healthcare costs each year.
