CLIMIT Summit 2025

🌍 A huge thank you to Gassnova SF for hosting the Carbon Dioxide Removal Mission at their first in-person Conference, as part of the 𝐂𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐈𝐓 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭 in Larvik, Norway (February 25-28, 2025).   This was a true global collaboration — bringing together the CDR community to discuss key issues like coalition building for scale-up, carbon markets, 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐌𝐑𝐕), and international partnerships. During the summit, TCM also hosted a side event, presenting its role in CCS technology development. #cathingourfuture “Our main message was that working with TCM benefits developers at any stage of technology maturation. Early-stage innovators can refine their strategies with TCM’s guidance, while those closer to commercialization can identify and bridge gaps in deployment,” Rouzbeh J. explained. The summit also facilitated engagement with potential clients and partners. “We connected with stakeholders not only in carbon capture but also in transport and storage. I had an incredible experience at the Climit Summit 2025 in Norway, where I joined a panel to discuss CCUS and CDR strategies toward 2040 from an R&D&D perspective and showcased Saudi Arabia’s CCUS and CDR initiatives. I also had the privilege of attending the first in-person CDR Mission meeting, contributing to key discussions on scaling carbon management solutions. The summit provided a valuable platform to learn about global CCUS and CDR initiatives and engage with leading experts in the field. I connected with stakeholders from across the industry, especially from Norway, a global leader in CCS development. It was also an honor to be part of the Smart CDR Competition, with King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) as a sponsor, and to witness innovative solutions from talented winners around the world. A major highlight was visiting the Brevik CCS project, the world’s first carbon capture initiative in the cement industry. Seeing this real-world implementation reinforced the urgency of accelerating CCS technologies. Looking forward to driving further innovation in carbon management

At the 2023 CLIMIT Summit, the CLIMIT Award was presented for the first time. This year, the award celebrates three winners who have been instrumental in the launch of Longship, each making invaluable contributions to Norway’s ambition of establishing a full-scale CCS value chain. These pioneers – Oscar Graff, Per Brevik, and Philip Ringrose – exemplify innovation, perseverance, and leadership in the field. Our CarbonRun team is still buzzing from the fun and excitement of the #CLIMITSUMMIT2025 hosted in the breathtaking city of Larvik, Norway. We were honoured to be able to share our story and learnings to 300+ leaders and learners as part of Mission Innovation’s International CDR Conference on day 1 of CLIMIT. Shannon Sterling discussed the challenges and opportunities to developing projects internationally; and Andy Lam participated in a panel on how coalition building can accelerate the growth of CDR. But the most exciting news from the conference was that Equlantic, was one of the three winners of the Carbon Dioxide Removal Mission #SMARTCDR competition! Equlantic was the only North American team to make it to the final six in Norway; out of over 70 teams. Congrats to CarbonRun team members Isaac Bahler, Rowan Norrad, Cameron Richardson along with Caliyena Brown and Will Myrer! The carbon removals market faces a challenge: while there are hundreds of startups, there appears to be only one major buyer. 🤷♀️🌎 Or so it seems. Microsoft has been leading the way, but it turns out there are a few more of us—although not nearly enough! I had the honor of joining industry leaders from Microsoft SINTEF Carbon Counts and Equinor to discuss the critical shortage of buyers and the policy gaps hindering large-scale adoption. At the #CLIMITSUMMIT2025 in Larvik earlier this week, we delved into these issues during a panel discussion on carbon removals. DNV is an active buyer, signing a contract to purchase carbon removal credits from Inherit from 2025 onwards. A promising step toward a more sustainable future! What does it take to deliver large scale carbon removal projects today? Carbon removals was high on the agenda during CLIMIT Summit 2025 in Larvik this week. Contributing to the international knowledge sharing session in the main program, I was fortunate to be invited as a speaker and share some of the learnings we have had working with pioneers such as Heidelberg Materials, Hafslund Celsio, Ørsted, Twence and CO280. Significant CDR contracts have been announced in the carbon removals market, but very few projects are actually being built or have passed FID. This is why the learnings from projects such as the ongoing Ørsted Kalundborg Hub project, where SLB Capturi partnered with Microsoft, Ørsted and Northern Lights JV, are so important to share enabling more projects going forward. At SLB Capturi, the joint venture between Aker Carbon Capture and SLB, we are fortunate to have had people with us that have shown perseverance and grit with regards to getting the first of a kind projects delivered. The recognition that was showed to Heidelberg Materials Sement Norge’s Per Brevik and our own board member at Aker Carbon Capture ASA, Oscar Graff, during the CLIMIT Summit this year was well deserved as they have contributed significantly to founding this new industry. The time it takes to develop CCS projects is significant, often spanning several years from conception to implementation. This long timeline underscores the need for immediate action and sustained investment.

Moreover, many developers severely underestimate the complexity involved in generating Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) credits. The process is intricate, requiring meticulous planning, robust verification, and continuous monitoring to ensure the integrity of the credits, a perfect case for digitalisation!
