🚀 Calling All Experts in Formal Methods & Software Security! 🚀 Our Information Innovation Office seeks input from those with experience in formal mathematical methods (formal methods) to help secure critical Department of Defense (DOD) systems against adversarial attacks. For too long, the DOD has accepted the cycle of identifying and patching software vulnerabilities after they are exploited. It’s time we change that. Now, we want to hear from you: 🔹 Are you working with or aware of DOD systems that could benefit from these cutting-edge tools? 🔹 Do you have expertise in formal methods and their real-world implementation? 🔹 Are you interested in shaping best practices for securing mission-critical software? We’re exploring additional pathways to transition these tools into operational systems, including hands-on assessments to measure security improvements. Your insights could help define the future of software resilience in national defense. 📢 Respond to this Request for Information (RFI) to contribute by April 10! Let’s work together to move beyond reactive patching and create secure-by-design software for the warfighter. About us
DARPA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense with a singular and enduring mission: to make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security. The Agency explicitly reaches for transformational change instead of incremental advances. To do so, it works within an innovation ecosystem that includes academic, corporate and governmental partners, with a constant focus on the Nation’s military Services, which work with DARPA to create new strategic opportunities and novel tactical options. DARPA comprises approximately 220 government employees in six technical offices, including nearly 100 program managers, who together oversee about 250 research and development programs. DARPA goes to great lengths to identify, recruit and support excellent program managers—extraordinary individuals who are at the top of their fields and are hungry for the opportunity to push the limits of their disciplines. These leaders, who are at the very heart of DARPA’s history of success, come from academia, industry and government agencies for limited stints, generally three to five years. That deadline fuels the signature DARPA urgency to achieve success in less time than might be considered reasonable in a conventional setting. Program managers address challenges broadly, spanning the spectrum from deep science to systems to capabilities, but ultimately they are driven by the desire to make a difference. They define their programs, set milestones, meet with their performers and assiduously track progress. But they are also constantly probing for the next big thing in their fields, communicating with leaders in the scientific and engineering community to identify new challenges and potential solutions. DARPA is always on the lookout for outstanding individuals who can meet our demanding needs in the Agency’s technical and support offices. Interested individuals may submit a resume/CV to [email protected].

🌎 Using the Earth’s atmosphere as a global sensor shows promise. We’re hosting a hybrid in-person/virtual workshop April 15-17 at Embry-Riddle in Daytona, Beach, to share modeling tools & other successful results from the Atmosphere as a Sensor (AtmoSense) program. AtmoSense, which began in late 2020, set out to understand the fundamentals of energy propagation from the Earth’s surface to the ionosphere to determine whether the atmosphere can be used as a sensor. A fundamental science effort, AtmoSense aimed to measure acoustic and electromagnetic waves propagating through the atmosphere to see if they could provide clues about the nature, location, and size of a disturbance event that occurred on Earth. The open-source tools developed under AtmoSense may be the first step toward “reading” — from extended distances — information contained in atmospheric waves propagating from an event happening anywhere in the world. The future of math starts now! 🔢💡 Math is the source of enormous technological innovation and surprise, but it can take decades to make breakthroughs. Patrick Shafto is leading our new Exponentiating Mathematics (expMath) program that will explore how AI can radically accelerate the rate of progress in mathematics. Just as computers once transformed calculations, expMath technology could put powerful mathematical tools at everyone’s fingertips, redefining the pace of discovery if successful. We’re calling on math and AI communities to come together and join us in this pursuit. 📢 For those interested in attending the expMath Proposers Day, the deadline to register is April 8 for non-U.S. residents, and April 16 for U.S. residents. Through DARPA R&D, two X-planes flew as risk reduction for the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) platform, logging several hundred hours each. Decades after DARPA seeded stealth technology, a new generation takes flight. We are proud of our role in shaping American air dominance, past, present, and future. We’re holding a live-virtual webinar on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, to provide information about the Crystal Substrate Bonding Technologies and Algorithms (CRYSTAL) Advanced Research Concepts (ARC) Opportunity. Registration deadline is noon ET on Tuesday, April 1. For more information and the registration link please visit: https://lnkd.in/enwBxVQj The problem: Bonded single crystal thin film multi-functional materials — such as those with electro-optic, acousto-electric, acousto-optic, magneto-optic or multi-ferroic properties — are vital for diverse Defense Department sensing, actuation, and communications technologies. These include integrated quantum, photonic, terahertz, and radio frequency devices and systems. Wafer bonding onto compatible substrates is the critical step for integrating single crystal thin films into multi-functional devices and systems. There is currently no method to analytically investigate wafer bonding processes. Brute force experimentation is required for initial process development, and subsequent changes in materials or device parameters requires significant additional trial and error, incurring huge costs, and prolonging timeframes. The ability to predictively model wafer bonding of thin film crystals would rapidly accelerate the research and development of multi-functional materials, and their fabrication and scalable integration in diverse applications. Question we need your help answering: To accelerate development and integration of multi-functional materials, how do we create generalizable models to explore thin film crystal bonding onto suitable substrates under diverse real-world process conditions and parameters? Scope of proposed solutions: The CRYSTAL ARC Opportunity seeks proposals that create multi-physics modeling and simulation frameworks to fundamentally understand how process conditions affect crystal-substrate wafer bond formation and interface properties between thin film multi-functional materials and compatible substrates. About ARC: DARPA’s ARC program rapidly solicits and explores a high volume of promising new ideas for limited-scope investments. Projects focus on answering high-risk/high-reward questions and assessing the impact of further investment on problems of importance to the Department of Defense.
