  • We wanted to close out Women's History Month by recognizing Angela, a former Army #Veteran and current member of Operation Opportunity! Watch this short video to learn about her journey transitioning into public education, and discover the valuable skills she developed during her military service that have helped her, along with thousands of other Veterans, successfully transition into civilian careers. Feel free to drop a comment below highlighting some other useful skills Veterans can bring to the table! [VD: A blue graphic with blue and green arrows behind the Disability:IN logo beside text Operation Opportunity fades into a video of a women with light, long hair in a black flower printed top speaking into a camera with a blurred background. As she speaks, captions populate on the screen.] Transcript: Hello. My name is Angela and I am an army veteran. I served in early 2000s as a medic. I transitioned from National Guard service to completing my education. I decided to go into public education first as a home ec teacher, and then in special education. I think military service really hones in on and it starts day one is the value of teamwork. There’s almost no time in the military that you were working in isolation. As a medic there are other that are doing something similar. There certainly can be different tasks were assigned to at any given moment, but we are working in conjunction with each other to complete a mission.    The other big thing big takeaway of military service that I learned was that beginning task is important certainly but finishing a task is also important and finishing it well not leaving something half done and making sure that Is are dotted Ts are crossed that small detail matters.    Veterans are always working in a spectrum of positions and there’s probably people underneath them reporting to them about something and there’s certainly people above them. I think that veterans specifically are able to manage and navigate that potential position of power in a corporate setting versus somebody that has not been in the military. Operation Opportunity has really been able to put into place different options and opportunities to support to support Veterans. So that can look like redoing my résumé, posting different networking type events, helping make connections with other veterans at some of these events, and then also Dr. Louis is great about supporting connections with other corporate businesses. Knowing that I’m not alone in this search, it’s a great feeling to feel like somebody understands the supportive and wants to try and help me so I’ve been really grateful to Dr. Louis and the Operation Opportunity team.
