“My journey into construction began with a love for architecture. During my undergraduate years, I was convinced that architecture would be my lifelong path. However, right out of college, I participated in a teaching program aimed at under-resourced areas and went on to pursue a master’s in education. Architecture stayed with me though. After four years of teaching, I was still itching to get into architecture and a great opportunity opened up. I went to work for an architecture firm on a huge project for the LA Community College District. At the time, it was one of the biggest in the area. It’s also where I was first introduced to construction. After two years, I started working for a general contractor and knew that construction was the career for me. In 2015, I joined DPR. What stood out from the start was our culture and environment. I was impressed with the number of women in roles such as project managers and estimators. At that time, a decade ago, that was not common among other construction firms and unique to DPR. Today, we have an incredibly strong network of women from diverse backgrounds throughout the organization from superintendents and project executives to project managers, PEs and workgroup leaders. As we celebrate Women in Construction Week this week, one piece of advice I would give is the importance of being confident and proactive in one’s career. When I started out as a PE nearly 20 years ago, I tended to follow directions and perform assigned tasks. As I gained experience, I recognized how essential it is to take control of your own career by actively seeking out training and development opportunities and clearly communicating your goals and ambitions. It’s critical for your own professional and personal growth. Becoming a great place to work demands consistent, ongoing effort. It’s not enough to simply aspire to be great. It involves hard work and collaboration from all team members to make things successful.” Irma J. is a Construction Operations Manager in Southern California, part of the Hispanic/Latiné Employee Resource Group Leadership Team and a #pillarofconstruction. *Our Pillars of Construction series celebrates the experiences and perspectives of DPR employees, reflecting on how our histories and culture shape us. #womeninconstruction #wicweek #womenshistorymonth
