How do you effectively enable your reps through training? “The solution isn’t always training. It could be a communication issue, or it could be lack of awareness. However, if there is a training issue, the first realization is that there’s a skill gap,” says Brianna Lewke, Senior Director of GTM Enablement at Lyra Health. Before the reps go through the session, you must first ask: - What’s the desired outcome, i.e., the behavior change we’re looking for? - How does this align with the business goal? Here’s the procedure that Brianna follows: ✅ First of all, establish 3 critical learning outcomes. ✅ Next, fix the baseline. Conduct a knowledge assessment to determine the baseline, maybe like a “confidence meter”. At the beginning of the session, ask your reps: “How confident are you in these 3 areas?” ✅ List down the learning goals. At the end of the session, ask them again: “How confident are you in these 3 areas?” This might give you a hint towards their confidence levels. Once this is done, you can observe the behavorial changes. You can create the best onboarding experience. But, if it doesn’t translate to desired behaviors, it amounts to nothing. What Goldilocks teaches us about setting quotas 💡 The Goldilocks Rule is derived from the tale of Goldilocks and the three bears. It states that a task should neither be too easy nor too hard. If the task is too difficult: - Cortisol is overproduced - The “thinking” brain is switched off - The “survival” brain takes charge This makes it harder for you to think clearly and solve the problem. Conversely, if the task is too easy: - Your dopamine levels sink - You feel zero motivation This leads to a “why bother” feeling. The trick lies in finding the ideal zone. Where you feel: “If I stretch just a bit, I know I can finish the task.” The ideal zone is where both dopamine and cortisol are produced. “With both cortisol & dopamine, we become both focused & motivated at the same time. That’s where growth happens,” says 🟦 Melissa Hughes, Ph.D. How do you apply this to your quotas? Set the bar too low or high, and your teams struggle. Uber has cemented its spot as one of the top ride-sharing companies 🚖 However, getting there wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Here’s the scoop 👇 In the early 2010s, Uber had to combat the monopoly of offline cabs. So it rewarded its drivers based on the number of rides completed. The problem? Drivers started engaging in risky behaviors like rash driving, just to maximize their incentive. As a result, there was a surge in customer complaints & safety issues. Uber was quick enough to notice two things: customers were unhappy with the rides, as well as drivers weren’t incentivized for safer rides. The fix? They revamped their incentive structure with a scoring criteria, which included: - Customer ratings - Cancellation rates - Reports of safety concerns The result? Better quality rides. Decrease in safety concerns. Both customers & drivers were happier. Win-win 💡 The lesson?
