We help family businesses have the right conversations at the right time, in a community that understands their needs.

About us

The Family Business Center is for those who want to move family and business forward, together. Our programming engages more than 150 family businesses annually, creating an ecosystem to gather, learn, hold important conversations and share experiences with others. We're here for the now-gens and the next-gens and help bridge any gaps that may exist. While most come from the Twin Cities area, regular attendees come from across Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. Some are Tommie alumni, many are not. Founded in 1991 as one of the first centers in the country, we’ve served almost 900 family businesses, and have never been more vibrant: Our Family Business Breakfast Series is the hallmark of programming, bringing together family businesses of all sizes, seven times a year. They learn from experts & fellow family businesses, while engaging with a community who understands their unique needs. Peer groups are moderated by local family business advisors and include one for executives, two for women and three for next gen members. Participants bring issues and challenges, gain feedback from peers, and essentially become each other's personal board. Our work in underserved communities is bringing new conversations to places that haven’t accessed family business programming in the past. Annual events like our l next generational gathering, women’s leadership event, and full- and half-day workshops provide chances for deeper connection and relationships, while taking family learning to another level. The Advisor Engagement Luncheon hosts an average of 125 attendees at each of three annual events, bringing advisors together to learn with their family business clients. We believe strong family businesses lead to strong communities. And we know that family businesses who engage with our center are better able to tackle the unique issues they face. We hope you can join our community, to hold important discussions and create a plan for your family’s future generations!

  • This week, we’d like to introduce you to Murphy Logistics Solutions, a company with more than 120 years of rich history in the Twin Cities. Over the years, the Murphy family has been deeply involved in the Family Business Center. Richard Murphy, the former President & CEO, was a well-respected leader both in the Twin Cities business community and within our organization, serving on our board until his passing in 2019. Two of Murphy’s non-family CEOs have participated in our peer groups, their current board chair has been a speaker at our family breakfast and advisor lunch while also participating in the Women's Peer Group, and several family members regularly attend our family breakfasts. Murphy started in St. Paul in 1904, hauling goods by horse-drawn wagon, and has since grown into a regional powerhouse with 16 facilities across Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and New York, totaling 5.3 million square feet of logistics space. Now in its fifth generation of Murphy leadership, the company remains family-owned, with Kirk Fischer as President and CEO—only the second non-Murphy to take the helm. Under the Murphy family’s continued leadership and with Kirk at the forefront, one of the Twin Cities' own is reaching new heights.

  • Thanks to Janel Dressen of Anthony Ostlund Louwagie Dressen & Boylan P.A. for once again leading such an important conversation in our center on family business ownership. Three years after she spoke on Rights and Responsibilities of Owners, our families wanted to hear from her again. Today, Janel presented Essential Agreements for Family Businesses, and it was another fantastic event. There's a lot that makes family business unique (and hard!), and of them, ownership doesn't get enough attention. It did today, and our family business community will be much stronger because of it. Thanks to all who attended, and thank you Janel for sharing your expertise again!
