As a senior in high school, Ryan Joyce nearly lost his father during the attacks on 9/11, as he was working in the Pentagon as the plane struck. That day, Ryan made a commitment to learn everything possible about the people that coordinated said attacks. The language, the culture, he wanted to understand “why”. Unbeknownst to him at the time, this would lead him down a career path of becoming a CIA operative, spending time in various Middle East countries sitting face-to-face with members of Al-Qaeda, working to turn them to the USA’s favor. After a successful career tracking terrorists, Ryan came home with the entrepreneurial bug and wanted to apply the skills he’d developed in his past life to a new business stateside. In his words, he wanted to make a positive impact on the world, and as he looked for problems to solve, he focused on things “above the center-fold of the newspaper”. As the pandemic was now underway, a common problem discussed in media was the supply chain crisis that was unfolding. Ryan recognized an opportunity to apply his creative tracking techniques to the supply chain, noting that, at the time, it was possible to easily see where any plane was in the sky, or vessel in the ocean, but the same could not be said for trucks on the road. Thus was born GenLogs. After our conversation on this week’s episode of The Freight Pod, I can say with confidence that Ryan and his team have brought a completely new approach to the industry, and his supply chain intelligence platform will be creating value for industry participants in a multitude of ways.
