Why are private equity investors focusing on Japan? “The opportunity for corporate carveouts or take-privates is firmly on the radar”, explained Stephanie Hui at Asian Private Banker’s recent Alternatives in Focus 2025 event. Japan’s economy is about one-sixth the size of the United States', but it has a similar number of listed companies. Close to 40% are trading below book value and being encouraged to delist. Many hold real estate and cross-shareholdings on their balance sheets. “There is a lot of intrinsic worth to be unlocked,” said Stephanie, “but relationships very much matter in Japan, so it’s important to have an experienced sponsor who can build the trust of these companies”.
