Here's how it works: - Gas is like a cake: It's made with different ingredients. Some cheap ingredients that work well in winter make gas evaporate too easily for summer. - Summer gas is more expensive: Companies have to use pricier ingredients to meet the government's rules for summer gas. The change happens in stages: First, big companies that sell lots of gas start using the summer kind. Then, the places where gas stations get their gas switch over. Finally, your local gas station starts selling summer gas. By summer, all gas in the US has to have an RVP of 9 or less. Some places, like Reno, Nevada, and Detroit, Michigan, have even stricter rules.
