By mid-century, 70% of people will live in cities. For growing urban centers, tall buildings offer a solution—allowing for greater density while preserving open space and limiting sprawl. Tall buildings of today must also respond to a changing world through sustainable and resilient design that promotes environmental health and community wellbeing. The buildings featured in HOK Tall Buildings, Volume 2, illustrate how our architects and engineers have accomplished these goals in projects around the world. Some are iconic towers soaring hundreds of meters into the sky. Others fit comfortably into their context at under 20 stories. A few others take existing high-rises and re-purpose their infrastructure to create new tenant options that extend their use and purpose. Regardless of size, scale and type, each project integrates structure and science to create forward-thinking, lasting solutions. Since opening its doors a decade ago, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital has won numerous awards. What remains remarkable, however, is that the Singapore hospital continues to set standards for sustainable healthcare design and delivery. On its 10th anniversary, we're proud to report a few key performance metrics for the hospital designed in collaboration with HOK, CPG Corporation and Studio505. ⏱𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝘀: Ng Teng Fong's patient-centric design (which includes ample daylighting, natural ventilation and views of nature) has resulted in significantly shorter patient stays. Data shows Ng Teng Fong patients stay 2 fewer days in the hospital (5 days vs. 7) compared to other Singapore facilities. 🌿𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Ng Teng Fong's sustainable design has contributed to a 30% improvement in operational efficiency and sustainability metrics. 💡𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: Strategic planning and programming, such as dedicated pharmacies on every floor and cross-specialty ICUs, have resulted in a 22% reduction in manpower costs while maintaining high-quality care. Interior Design Magazine spotlights HOK’s design of Co-operators’s new headquarters in Guelph, Ontario - a 225,000-sq.-ft. LEED Gold-certified facility that’s also pursuing zero-carbon and WELL Platinum certifications. “Co-operators’s values, culture, and mission are different from those of traditional organizations, and that really inspired us,” says Caitlin Turner, our senior principal and director of design, interiors in Toronto. The headquarters brings together 1,200 employees in a nature-inspired workplace that prioritizes wellness, sustainability and community connection. Design elements throughout the building reference Co-operators’s 80-year history, from curved walnut-paneled walls representing tree roots to a stunning 17-by-34-foot living green wall featuring 3,000 plants arranged in the company’s chevron logo. Workspaces are designed for neurodiversity with specially tailored lighting, quiet areas and sensory-friendly textures, while a central atrium and cantilevered staircase create opportunities for what Turner calls “serendipitous collisions” between colleagues. The project exemplifies how sustainable design can support both environmental goals and human well-being. Read more in Interior Design: https://lnkd.in/gQhkiScy 📷 Eric Laignel

Take a look at the innovative design behind Canada’s Advanced Material Manufacturing Centre. HOK, Architecture49 Inc. and WSP collaborated to deliver this first built project of the Laboratories Canada program, which aims to place Canada at the forefront of breakthrough research and cutting-edge discoveries, driving economic growth and innovation. A key aspect of the project is its emphasis on flexible lab and administrative space design. Lab areas are configured with modularity in mind, allowing for horizontal expansion. Demountable walls offer the flexibility for labs to seamlessly expand. A custom-designed lab solution integrates wall systems and overhead service carriers to facilitate plug-and-play reconfiguration of lab casework. Ceiling service panels enable complete reconfiguration of lab casework without disrupting electrical or plumbing services, ensuring adaptability to evolving research needs. “The design for this project was not just about designing the building, it was about creating an environment where science can thrive,” says HOK Senior Laboratory Planner Shrey Chandra, AIA, LEED AP.
