Changing the world’s energy future and securing our nation's critical infrastructure ⚛️
About us
In operation since 1949, Idaho National Laboratory is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's missions in energy research, nuclear science and national defense. The world's first usable amount of electricity from nuclear energy was generated here in 1951. At 890 square miles (569,135 acres), the INL Site is roughly 85 percent the size of Rhode Island. In addition to our geographic resources, the lab hosts a variety of unique facilities, including the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility. Complementing our nuclear research, the lab has numerous alternative energy and national security programs. Robotics, wind power, high-performance computing, biofuels, critical infrastructure protection, carbon management and advanced vehicle testing are just a few examples of our multifaceted research capabilities. If you are looking for a 21st-century energy or technology career, visit our Careers tab at www.inl.gov.

Today, our Hot Fuel Examination Facility (HFEF) celebrates its 50th birthday! 🎉 When it began operations in 1975, HFEF was built as a bigger, more versatile sister facility to the Fuel Conditioning Facility (FCF), to support the examination of used nuclear fuel. While it has undergone many changes over the years, HFEF has always kept its mission, and it’s still the largest inert atmosphere hot cell in the United States! How great are these historic photos of HFEF throughout the years? Shawna Bailey is an experiment design engineer at Idaho National Laboratory. ⚛️ Her research is focused on designing advanced technology that will precisely model fuel pins within INL’s Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). After the models are created, they will be analyzed to better understand structural changes before and after irradiation, meaning after they’ve been exposed to nuclear fission. FAST FACT: ATR is the only U.S. research reactor capable of providing high-flux thermal neutron irradiation in a prototype environment, making it the perfect place to study nuclear fuels. Last week, we kicked off the 2025 cohort of the OT Defender Fellowship. 👏 This highly-selective educational program, created, funded and led by the Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER) for middle- and senior-level operational technology (OT) cybersecurity managers in the energy sector. They are provided the opportunity to learn about the strategies used to target our energy infrastructure and the cybersecurity tools and research the U.S. government is developing to counter them. Protecting the nation’s energy infrastructure from modern threats is vital to maintaining national security, a vibrant economy, and public health and safety. Did you know Idaho National Laboratory has sponsored and hosted a regional National Science Bowl competition for 35 years? 📚 🚨🧠 This year, more than 45 Idaho teams went head-to-head in several grueling rounds of a round-robin-style competition. Join us in congratulating Twin Falls High School and Malad Middle School for earning first place in the high school and middle school categories, respectively. Both teams will head to Washington, D.C., in April to compete against other teams from across the U.S. “The science bowl offers a fun, fast-paced environment where students of different ages can show their intelligence in math and science.” — Steve Zollinger, Eastern Idaho Science Bowl coordinator Learn more about the National Science Bowl and our STEM program: https://lnkd.in/ec-dZmU https://lnkd.in/gUfujNfD U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) TWIN FALLS SCHOOL DISTRICT 411 #NationalScienceBowl #STEM #competition #education #science #INL #ScienceBowl #Idaho
