For 2025 #IEEE Medal of Honor Laureate, Henry Samueli, a lifelong passion for electrical engineering started with a school project radio kit. Samueli went on to research digital signal processing architectures for broadband communications. His subsequent breakthrough enabled the widespread adoption of broadband internet services via cable TV networks, and Samueli’s semiconductor devices power billions of consumer smartphones, set top boxes, tablets, laptops and IoT devices today. World Water Day is observed annually on 22 March to highlight the importance of Earth’s most vital resource, focusing on topics like water management, conservation and more. Water is inextricably linked to all that we do, making it crucial to think about it as an interconnected resource—especially as electric power generation becomes the largest category for global water consumption. The @ieee-sa-ieee-standards-association Energy and Water Nexus Industry Connections project aims to optimize the intersection of these two sectors, bringing stakeholders together to evaluate and develop integrated approaches. Desalination is an effective strategy to help address global water access, especially in regions with rapidly growing populations. However, removing salt from seawater or salty groundwater is an extremely energy-intensive process, making desalination a last resort for many countries. But, the plummeting cost of renewable energy could be a game-changer, helping to make desalination a more feasible option to address water scarcity around the globe.
