IFC - International Finance Corporation has partnered with Kifiya Financial Technology PLC to bring digital financial services to one million smallholder farmers in Ethiopia. This initiative is a significant step towards transforming Ethiopia's agricultural sector, improving livelihoods, and contributing to economic growth and food security. Together with Kifiya, we aim to increase access to digital financial services by digitally mapping and profiling one million farmers, and by training agents that provide financial services, allowing farmers to make payments, deposit or withdraw money, and potentially access loans. Supported by the Gates Foundation, this initiative aligns with Ethiopia's Digital Agriculture Roadmap (2025-2032) and its Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy. Multilateral development banks (MDBs) and development finance institutions (DFIs) play an important role in connecting private capital to investment opportunities in emerging markets. A new report shows that private sector investment mobilized by MDBs and DFIs into middle-and low-income countries rose an annual 24 percent in 2023. Mobilization to lower income countries alone rose 40 percent—an all-time high for mobilizing private capital to these countries.
