We brought back ‘Pints and Patriotism’ last week and it was a huge success! It’s clear that people are eager to get together and talk about what’s happening in our country right now, but there aren’t many places to be able to do so. So we created that space with our friends democracyFIRST and brought together veterans and their neighbors to talk about what’s at stake for America right now, just as we did last fall. Only now, the stakes arguably feel greater. As I’ve said over and over again as the CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA): The Post-9/11 generation of veterans are ready to step up and lead when America needs us most. We saw it in the room last Wednesday night, and I promise you’ll see it in the days and weeks ahead. #AskNot #VetsRising #PintsAndPatriotism

  • Two years ago this week, the VA finally answered IAVA’s years-long call to change its motto to be more inclusive. It now reads: “To fulfill President Lincoln’s promise to care for those who have served in our nation’s military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors.” This fight - our #SheWhoBorneTheBattle campaign - was always about more than just words. It was about drawing attention to the culture at the VA and modernizing a system that must support ALL who have served.

Spending time with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) was an incredible experience—standing alongside fellow Veterans, military family members, and dedicated advocates who are committed to making a difference. This opportunity wasn’t just about being in the room; it was about actively participating in democracy as it’s meant to be, raising our voices for those who have served, engaging in meaningful conversations, and ensuring that the needs of Veterans and their families remain at the forefront. A huge thank you to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) for the opportunity and to everyone I had the privilege of standing beside. The fight for better resources, policies, and support continues, and I’m grateful to be part of it. A special thank you to the Maryland representatives we met with for their time and commitment, and to Rep Julia Brownley (CA) for all she has done, and will continue to do, for Veterans. #IAVA #Veterans #VetsRising #Democracy

A little over 9 years ago, I walked into the doors of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) and my life has never been the same since. It was also an incredible honor to return to IAVA in 2023 to be its CEO - and to make a little history in the process. The past two years have also been incredibly rewarding, but it's time to pass the baton to another leader. As I did when I last stepped away from IAVA, I will remain committed and believe deeply in the work that IAVA does to ensure that the voices of the post-9/11 generation of veteran are heard -- and more importantly -- listened to. And I feel incredibly grateful for the lifelong friends I’ve made during my time at IAVA. So I look forward to staying in touch with many of you as I embark on a new chapter. And trust that whatever the future has in store for me - I 100% will still be fighting the good fight. America is a mission I've been working on for my entire adult life, and that will never change. #AskNot #VetsRising #IAVACavalry

  • Thanks to the Members of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, who were able to meet with #IAVACavalry advocates last week. We truly appreciate their time and support, and thank you to Rep. Brownley for always making time for IAVA members!

I had the incredible honor of meeting Congresswoman Julia Brownley, a dedicated advocate for veterans and the military community. As a United States Representative for California’s 26th District, she has been a strong voice for policies that support those who have served our country. During our conversation, we discussed legislation and initiatives that impact veterans, including the 30% of the federal workforce made up of veterans. She truly understands that taking care of our veterans strengthens not only their lives but also our nation as a whole. Her commitment to working with organizations that support military families and veterans is inspiring. It was a privilege to sit down with her, be heard, and share ideas on how we can continue to improve veteran support systems. Leaders like Rep. Brownley make a real difference by listening, advocating, and taking action. #VeteranAdvocacy #MilitaryCommunity #Leadership #JuliaBrownley #Veterans #SupportOurTroops #PolicyMatters #MilitaryTransition #StrongerTogether

What an amazing opportunity to advocate on behalf of my fellow Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) veterans in the offices of our Senators and Representatives. I encourage more of you to join the Cavalry and to help us continue to make our voices heard. #VetsRising #IAVACavalry

One week ago in Washington, D.C. 📸 #IAVACavalry looking fresh before a few epic days walking the halls of Congress. These advocates lead a total of 92 meetings last week, pushing for issues that are personal and urgent for our community: alternative therapies, AUMF reform, support for our Afghan allies, just to name a few. IAVA is truly proud of their hard work and passion. And big thanks to United States Marine Corps vet Matthew Callahan for joining us last week and taking these photos.

  • Hear from #IAVACavalry member Daniel about his experience on the Hill advocating for those who served. Proud to have him (and The Fluffy Poodle) with us in this fight!

Advocating for Those Who Served. My Time on Capitol Hill Spending multiple days in Washington, D.C., advocating on Capitol Hill with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) was more than just meetings it was about making real change. I had the opportunity to share my story, listen to fellow veterans, and ensure that the voices of those who served are heard by the people who shape national policy. This experience reaffirmed what I love to do!!! Fighting for better support, resources, and policies for our military service members, veterans, and their families. Many don’t realize that veterans make up 30% of the government workforce and when we take care of them, we strengthen not only their lives but also the nation as a whole. If we fail to support them, the effects ripple across the workforce and beyond. Supporting veterans isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s essential for the future of our country. They’ve sacrificed for us; now it’s our turn to have their backs. I encourage everyone to take a moment to ask: What are you doing to support those who’ve served? Let’s keep the conversation going. Veterans matter. Their voices matter. And together, we can create lasting change.

Over the past couple of weeks, veterans from across the country, representing various organizations, traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate for veterans and their families. A big thank you to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) for allowing me to be part of an important and purposeful week of advocacy at our nation’s Capitol. Shout out to the #IAVA staff for coordinating an impactful week! Regardless of political affiliation, these are undeniably challenging times for our government. I’m grateful to the Congressional members and staff who took the time to hear our stories, seek common ground, and work toward ensuring veterans receive the benefits and care they have earned through military service. I'm grateful that while I was there I also got to sneak in some time to see my old boss Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and friend Seth Magaziner! The road ahead may be difficult. My thoughts are with many friends working in government, and I hope the private sector recognizes and values the incredible talent of those whose jobs are lost or at risk. Like any organization, the government has inefficiencies, but it is also home to some dedicated and skilled professionals whose contributions should not go unnoticed or unutilized. It may get harder before it gets better, but our country and our veterans are resilient - we'll push through this! #vetsrising #veterans #government
