Your home has a fatal design flaw: Yes, it works for young people. But it becomes a death trap after age 60... Here's how the "Peter Pan Problem" is putting millions of lives at risk: We spend 60 million hours annually caring for older adults across America. The deadliest place for them? Their own homes. Most houses become death traps because of what I call the "Peter Pan Problem" — designing spaces like we'll never age. Take something as basic as changing a lightbulb at 80: • Climb a ladder? Risk a fatal fall • Skip it? Your house grows darker • Dark house? Triple your fall risk The data is haunting: • Falls alone cost Medicare $50B yearly • Only 10% of homes are "aging-ready" • By 2030, 1 in 5 Americans will be 65+ Yet the fixes are surprisingly simple: • Smart lighting systems • Bathroom grab bars • Wider doorways • Non-slip flooring • Motion sensors But here's the psychological barrier: We're all living in denial about aging. This denial is costing us everything: • Overwhelmed hospitals • Burned-out families • Lost independence • Preventable deaths Consider this: A 10-year boost in life expectancy could add $366.8T to the global economy. We're throwing away trillions because we can't face reality. Your house isn't just a space — it's a time bomb. The solution isn't waiting until we're 80. It's redesigning our world today. Because aging isn't optional. The only choice is whether we're ready for it. - Thanks for reading! Create an amazing job so caregivers can provide amazing care. Well said, Seth Sternberg! 👏🧡
People say there’s a shortage of care professionals. There isn’t. With 3.9 million personal care aides in the U.S., the workers are there. The real challenge? Making sure they choose to work for you. At Honor and Home Instead, we’ve learned that success isn’t just about attracting clients—it’s about attracting care pros too. In this video, I break down why the companies that figure out how to compete for workers, not just customers, are the ones that win. Loneliness is worse for your health than smoking. Research across 4 countries proves it cuts 5 years off your life. And most people are at risk...without knowing it. New research across 4 countries reveals the silent epidemic destroying millions: For those that are lonely the chances of heart disease up 29%, dementia up 50%, and premature death risk up 26%. But here's what constantly keeps me up at night: Seniors face this crisis at 4x the rate of others. After building Honor and providing 60M+ hours of senior care, I've seen this firsthand. The cruel irony? Most "solutions" often make it worse. 42% of seniors in care facilities report severe loneliness - compared to just 10% aging at home. Why? They're stripped of everything familiar: • Decades of memories • Trusted neighbors • Community ties • Daily routines And it impacts them financially...isolated seniors spend $1,644 more on healthcare annually. But the human cost is far greater. They stay in hospitals longer. Return more often. Decline faster. Through our work with 50,000+ homes, we've discovered 3 critical factors that dramatically reduce senior isolation: • Staying in familiar spaces • Maintaining established routines • Preserving community connections The science is clear: aging at home transforms outcomes. But they need more than just care - they need genuine connection. That's why we match each senior with a consistent caregiver who becomes: • Someone who truly listens • A trusted confidant • A meal companion • A driving partner The transformation is remarkable: • Reduced healthcare costs • Higher life satisfaction • Stronger social bonds • Better health metrics If you have an aging loved one, these small actions make an outsized impact: • Create weekly meal traditions • Schedule regular video calls • Help arrange friend visits • Stop by consistently - brief visits matter The key isn't grand gestures. It's showing up regularly. - Thanks for reading! After building Honor & spending 60M+ hours caring for older adults, I'm sharing what I've learned about how society ages. Helping older adults stay in the homes they love isn’t just about innovation—it’s about making sure technology truly supports independence, care, and quality of life. 🧡 Our EVP, Head of Engineering Preeti Kaur was part of an important conversation during MIT AgeLab's annual Member Forum alongside other leaders shaping the future of aging. Grateful for the opportunity to discuss how technology and human care can work together to support aging in place. 🏡 Excited to keep innovating, collaborating, and finding real solutions that make life better for older adults and their families. 👏
One of the most important conversations we need to have today is how to ensure access to “digital independence enablers”—the technologies that empower aging-in-place, allowing people to remain in the homes where they’ve built a lifetime of memories. This future isn’t just about innovation—it’s about ensuring these technologies connect people to essential caregiver support, enhance daily convenience, and improve quality of life in older age. I had the honor of discussing this critical topic on a panel alongside Luke Yoquinto, Brian Cosker, and briana gilmore, I hope the conversation was as thought-provoking for the audience as it was for me. A huge thank you to MIT AgeLab and Dr. Joe Coughlin for inviting Honor to be part of this important discussion. The work being done in this space is shaping the future of aging, and I’m grateful to contribute to the conversation.
