About us

LEAP partners with school communities to offer creative arts programs to over 20,000 students across 140+ New York City schools in all 5 boroughs. Founded in 1977, LEAP is a leading creative youth development nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting equity and access to the arts for underserved children and youth from communities that have been intentionally and unintentionally excluded and under-resourced. Our K-12 programs inspire students with a love of learning and help them develop social emotional learning skills, expand their creativity, and hone critical thinking abilities. We believe that youth in our communities will be the next generation of lifelong learners, creative problem solvers, and collaborative leaders.

  • Confidence. Growth. Expression. That’s what happens when young people are given the space to explore their creativity. 🎥 In this video, one of our incredible LEAP students shares how our programs have helped her gain confidence in her art—from mastering shading techniques to learning how to bring her ideas to life, with and without paper. Her story is a reminder that every child is an artist—sometimes, they just need the right space to unlock their potential. 🖌️💭 💡 One of our Teaching Artists reflects: "One of my students told me, ‘I don’t like to draw.’ But when I saw his work, it was clear—he had something inside him waiting to come out. Art gives young people a way to express what’s on their minds, their hearts, and their bodies." ✨ Watch, listen, and be inspired. Because every young person deserves a chance to create. 📢 Tag someone who believes in the power of the arts! 🎨💜 #LEAPNYC #CreativeYouthDevelopment #ArtsInEducation #TheLEAPWay #StudentVoices #ConfidenceThroughArt

  • 💜🎨✨On International Women’s Day – Honoring LEAP’s Founders 💃 Today we honor two trailblazing women who laid the foundation for LEAP’s mission: Alice Krieger and Ila Lane Gross. 👩🏫🎭 In 1977, as NYC faced a financial crisis and arts programs were being cut from schools, these two visionary women saw a need for creative education. They believed that art could transform learning and committed themselves to bringing comprehensive, hands-on arts programming to NYC public schools. What started in just four schools has grown into one of NYC’s leading arts education organizations, reaching over 20,000 students annually. Their legacy continues today, empowering young people to explore their creativity, amplify their voices, and reach their full potential. Because of Alice & Ila, thousands of students today have access to the arts. We carry their vision forward every day. 💜💃 #InternationalWomensDay #LEAPNYC #WomenInEducation #ArtsForChange #CreativeYouthDevelopment

Arts and culture aren’t just something we watch - they’re something we DO! 🎨 Our latest national research reveals something powerful about Americans: we’re a nation of creators. Nearly half of us (48%) are actively making art, performing, or crafting in our free time. This isn’t just about professional artists. It’s about: 👉 Parents teaching traditional crafts to their kids 👉 Community members joining local theater productions 👉 Colleagues finding creative outlets after work 👉 Seniors exploring new forms of artistic expression This widespread participation tells us something crucial: Americans don’t just value arts and culture as observers - they see themselves as active participants in creating it. And here’s why this matters: when people engage in creative activities, they’re more likely to: -Support arts education in schools -Attend cultural events -Advocate for arts funding in their communities From kitchen table crafts to community theaters, we’re building a more vibrant, connected culture - one creative act at a time. • Imagine a world where creativity knows no bounds and every child discovers their hidden artistic potential. In the LEAP Exploring Creative Futures program, young minds are mentored to see beyond the traditional arts, diving into realms like video game music and commercial beats. As our TA points out in the vide, it's not just about actors; it's about the unsung heroes behind the scenes, crafting the art we consume daily. Students learn to create characters from their environment, mastering skills like shading and drawing, both with and without paper. One student, who claimed he didn't like to draw, revealed a talent that was waiting to be unleashed, proving it takes just one spark for brilliance to shine. In our improv and sketch classes, students learned full body awareness, listening, and responding, expanding the worlds they build with their imagination. This program doesn't just teach art; it instills confidence, diligence, and excellence, catapulting young creators into future careers. If you would like to learn more about our how you can support our Creative Futures and any other LEAP programs please reach out to *[email protected]. #CreativeFutures #ArtisticPotential #ImaginationUnleashed #MentorshipMatters
