As we celebrate #HealthWorkerWeek, we recognize the vital role health workers play in transforming communities. In Madagascar, the ACCESS program, implemented by Management Sciences for Health between 2018 and 2025 with support from USAID, worked tirelessly to bring primary health care closer to remote populations. By training more than 18,000 community health volunteers and equipping health facilities, the program strengthened Madagascar’s health system and ensured essential services reached the last mile -- a true testament to the dedication and resilience of health workers making a difference every day. #PrimaryHealthCare #GlobalHealth #HealthWorkers Frontline Health Workers Coalition https://lnkd.in/dbk6gND9

New Study Looks at Improving Survival Predictions for Breast Cancer Treatment in Indonesia A new publication by Management Sciences for Health experts and colleagues from #Indonesia digs into an important aspect of health technology assessment to make better decisions about breast cancer treatment. It's a little complex, so let's break it down. First, what is Health Technology Assessment (#HTA)? HTA is a process used to evaluate the benefits, risks, and costs of new health treatments or technologies, like medicines, medical devices, or procedures. It helps decision makers, like governments or health organizations, determine whether a treatment is worth offering to patients, based on its effectiveness, safety, and value for money. Essentially, it’s a way to make sure that health care resources are used in the best possible way to improve people's health. When we talk about resource allocation, prioritization, and evidence-based decision making, HTA is a tool to help us do that well. At Management Sciences for Health, we're lucky to have some of the top talent in the industry—including internationally recognized HTA pros like Rabia Sucu and Chris Suharlim—and many years of experience establishing HTA systems in different countries. One of the challenges with HTA is that it needs reliable and pertinent data inputs. Some of those data aren't always available in the contexts where we work. (Another reason why MSH focuses on helping countries build strong data systems). In the absence of those country-specific data points, HTA pros turn to statistical modelling. But are those models always right? Imagine you're using HTA to figure out the best breast cancer treatment options for Indonesia but you don't have enough data from Indonesia. You may turn to a breast cancer data set from, say, the United States. In such an example, your modelling will be quite interesting considering the differences between the United States and Indonesia. If available, you'd probably want to use a data set from a country more similar to Indonesia. Which brings us to the importance of our publication. In the words of one of the authors, Dr. Chris Suharlim, "This is a particularly meaningful milestone. The paper embodies a true south-to-south collaboration by adapting the Philippines’ breast cancer model and calibrating it with Indonesian cancer registry data. It’s the first time HTA modeling in Indonesia has integrated local real-world evidence in this way—demonstrating a pragmatic path for using available local data in LMICs, despite ongoing data infrastructure challenges." https://lnkd.in/dfsyW-J4 Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Center for Health Policy and Management, FK-KMK, Universitas Gadjah Mada Hector E. Everyone has a role to play in fighting #superbugs! And that's what we're doing in #Nigeria. One aspect of the multipronged approach required to combat what's known as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) includes raising awareness among the general public and equipping everyone with knowledge and tools to do their part. And who is better positioned to do that than the media outlets and community based organizations people trust? That is why together with the Fleming Initiative and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Nigeria we are holding workshops to empower community-based organizations and journalists to advocate for responsible antibiotic use and share information about the importance of good hygiene practices, the cornerstone of preventing infections. Organizations like Girl Child Freedom At The Grassroot are integrating AMR awareness into their initiatives, emphasizing the critical connection between sanitation and proper antibiotic use. Through strategies such as local radio programs, social media campaigns, and outreach, these groups aim to build a well-informed public. The workshops also gave journalists the tools to accurately report on AMR, fostering stronger accountability and healthier practices. This collaboration marks a vital step in safeguarding public health, reinforcing the need for informed, collective action. What other initiatives do you think we should consider? Leave us a comment.
