  • Tuesday at #WPW opened with a plenary session featuring FERC Commissioners Lindsay See and Dave Rosner, who were joined on the dais by NHA's CEO and President Malcolm Woolf, for a conversation touching on hydro's bipartisan support, the technology's role in meeting load growth demand, and solutions to permitting obstacles. Closing out the plenary, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) received NHA's award for Legislator of the Year, presented by Duff Mitchell, recognizing the senator's incredible dedication to #hydro, as well as the communities across Alaska #waterpower serves. Additionally, Senator Murkowski was joined by Senator Cantwell (D-WA) last Friday for the reintroduction of the Maintaining and Enhancing Hydroelectricity and River Restoration Act, which supports the development of hydroelectricity infrastructure by establishing a federal tax incentive to increase security and capacity of existing dams. After WPW sessions featuring topics ranging from essential guidance on tribal consultation to championing #PumpedStorage hydro concluded, attendees enjoyed lunch, as well as mentor/mentee opportunities for those new to the industry facilitated by NHA's FLOW. When lunch finished, more than 140(!) Advocacy Day participants headed to the National Mall complex to engage in more than 130 meetings, including almost 25 (!!!) member-level meetings. NHA's Advocacy Day, April 1, was seen through many different lenses, and each offered a unique perspective of the conversations and people telling water power's important story. In teams both big and small, water power advocates rose to the challenges of Advocacy Day, navigating buildings, security lines, and more to sit down with legislators and their staff to discuss the biggest issues impacting water power, as well as the countless opportunities available to the resource. The increase since last year in both member-level meetings and Advocacy Day participants shows not only the enormous momentum pushing U.S. #hydropower forward, but the level of legislative interest in water power topics, which have been the focus of multiple, recent bills. By turning out for NHA's Advocacy Day, the industry demonstrated to legislators the critical role of water in powering America. #WaterPowerWeek #WPW2025 #WPW

Thanks to all of the #WaterPowerWeek attendees who participated in #AdvocacyDay on #CapitolHill. Our members met with over 130 House and Senate offices to urge lawmakers from both parties to advance water power priorities in Congress. These include common-sense reforms like creating a 30% investment tax credit to support needed upgrades to the existing fleet. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/exsj6ch8 I was proud to join my colleagues today in this effort, and it was inspiring to see democracy in action!

  • Water power is flexible, dependable, and built for America. That's the industry's top message, as around 140 of us head to Capitol Hill today to meet with 134 House and Senate offices as part of Advocacy Day. There, we'll urge lawmakers to support sensible, bipartisan solutions to unleash hydro's full power. To help bolster that message, NHA is also unleashing a new ad campaign aimed at these Members of Congress and policy makers. Our ads, which urge greater tax support for upgrades to existing #hydropower, are running throughout the Nation's Capitol on social media, streaming platforms, print media and even digital billboards at bus stops and D.C. Metro stations. Check out our new 30-second ad below and click here to read more about NHA's policy priorities. https://lnkd.in/eDE4vaGw

  • With the sun now set on the first day of #WaterPowerWeek2025, the highlights are still fresh in our minds. The day began with tours of some of Washington D.C.'s most notable sites, and even NHA's WPW sign went on a tour of its own around the National Mall, where it frolicked with the cherry blossoms and sampled both #hydro history and art. When the afternoon rolled around, attendees gathered for sessions like "A Collaborative Framework to Strengthen Your Workforce," which demoed "The Pathway Forward" tool, supporting workforce development in the energy sector. This session featured speakers and presenters from Kleinschmidt Associates, Renewables Forward, and KGS Group. Water Power Week, like the name suggests, covers a wide-range of water technology topics, and the session "Connecting the Ocean to the Grid: Key Infrastructure for Marine Energy," explored what's needed to achieve successful marine energy integration. The session was joined by speakers from 3U Technologies LLC, Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, ORPC, and PacWave. Today also featured sessions on critical energy issues shaping the world, such as the rapid expansion of data centers, which are fueling electricity demand with a projected 160% increase by 2030! To meet energy needs, behind-the-meter solutions are being studied, and hydro could be key in helping balance high-performance computing with grid resilience. The session "Baseload for the Digital Age: How Hydropower Can Support Data Center Expansion" featured speakers from Grant County Public Utility District, Emrgy Inc., Constellation, and Digital Power Optimization, Inc. The day concluded with "Office Hours," where attendees had the opportunity to meet with representatives from U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and Bureau of Land Management to discuss current priorities, chat, and network. With record-breaking attendance for tomorrow's Advocacy Day, the week is off to a strong start! #WPW25 #WaterPowerWeek #hydropower

  • #WaterPowerWeek in Washington D.C. offers the opportunity for industry to come together and connect about key water power policies, but did you know that it also incorporates NHA's Advocacy Day?   Tomorrow, April 1, more than 140 water power advocates (a record for our fly-in!) will take to Capitol Hill to meet with legislators and their staff to discuss the biggest issues impacting U.S. water power.   To ensure attendee's time on the hill is as productive as possible, NHA's legislative team has set-up meetings with more than 134 Congressional offices and provided participants with policy pocket cards, as well as virtual and in-person advocacy trainings.   Today, WPW attendees were joined by House and Senate staffers, lobbyists, and NHA's legislative team to run through simulations of tomorrow's conversations. To support these critical meetings, attendees gained valuable insight from seasoned professionals and refined their messaging points. • Water Power Week (#WPW2025) in Washington D.C. has begun! With sessions starting later today, the morning has been ripe with opportunity to explore the nation's capitol. Already, a group of 40+ attendees visited some of D.C.'s most notable attractions, with help from the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, checking out the Capitol Crypt, the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, and the National Statuary Hall. Even the Water Power Week sign had a small adventure around the National Mall, where it soaked in the gorgeous cherry blossoms, which, in honor of #WaterPowerWeek2025, reached full bloom on March 28! The WPW sign even made strategic visits to the Renwick Gallery, which catalogued Merrill Gage's 1930 "Hydroelectric Power" sculpture - Art Deco panels depicting the story of #hydropower for Southern California Edison (SCE). The sign also visited the Smithsonian National Museum of American History to check-in on the "Power Machinery" exhibit, which tells the story of the United States' electrification history and the technologies, including #WaterPower, which made that important work possible! #WPW25 #WaterPowerWeek

Next week, hundreds of water power professionals will gather in Washington, D.C. for Water Power Week, where we'll make the case to America's top policymakers why investing in hydropower will help power America years into the future. To help share that message, Water Power Week attendees will head to Capitol Hill next Tuesday to participate in Advocacy Day. Around 140 of us will visit over 125 House and Senate offices to urge these lawmakers to support key water power priorities, like common-sense tax support for upgrades to existing hydro. We'll also have a big variety of programming back at the conference. That includes nearly 50 different offerings with speakers and guests ranging from Members of Congress to federal agency officials, top industry leaders, energy policy reporters, and many others. NHA is excited to welcome the broader water power community to The Nation's Capital for what is sure to be a great week. I'll see you there! It's not too late to register. • This report is alarming, as it suggests that millions of dollars in congressionally approved funding for hydropower could be at risk under the administration's cost-cutting plans. That includes over $400 million awarded to nearly 300 projects through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law's Section 247 hydroelectric incentives program — money that's going to red and blue districts alike. It's also surprising, as President Trump has shown his support for hydropower through his Executive Order on 'Unleashing American Energy' that specifically mentions hydro as a critical resource. We urge the Trump Administration to complete its review of federal funding as quickly as possible and to be mindful of the importance of hydropower in unleashing energy dominance.
