Out of the Archives: The City’s first water distribution tunnel was placed hundreds of feet underground to avoid utilities and subways, eliminate the disturbance of street construction, and protect the water supply from surface interference that could damage infrastructure and disrupt service. This photo taken under the Bronx shows the deep pressure tunnel’s just-installed concrete lining against bedrock, as well as switches and crossovers for rails that carried equipment. 18 miles long, City Water Tunnel No. 1 was built at the same time as the Catskill Aqueduct to distribute clean drinking water toward all five boroughs. Photo date: April 3, 1914. For more NYCDEP history, click: http://bit.ly/2tKkvDE. #NYCWater #tbt #Aqueduct #WaterTunnel #Engineering

DEP in the News Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala spoke last week with the Associated Press regarding the new, comprehensive study showing rising salinity levels in the City’s water supply. “The conclusion of this study is that if we don’t change our ways, in 2100 the Croton Water System becomes a nice recreational facility, but it ceases to be a water supply,” Aggarwala told the news outlet. “And that will directly impact everybody who drinks New York City water.” Read more here: https://on.nyc.gov/4iM0d5Q
