Our mission is to inspire, empower, and connect people to change their world.

About us

At the Obama Foundation, we are guided by a core belief: that ordinary people working together can change history. Our mission is to inspire those people to take action, empower them to change their world for the better, and connect them so they can achieve more together than they can alone. We were founded by community organizers, so when we seek change, we do it by bringing people together. That approach begins at home, on the South Side of Chicago, where we are building the Obama Presidential Center. The Center represents a historic opportunity for Chicago: a chance to build a world-class museum and public gathering space that celebrates our nation’s first African American President and First Lady, steps away from where he began his career, where she was raised, and where—together—they made their home. But that approach extends to all our work, whether it’s holding leadership training sessions in communities throughout the U.S., bringing local leaders together in countries around the world, working to support the global education of girls, or ensuring young men of color have pathways to opportunity. As President Obama has said, “we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together.” So join us.

  • Following his trip to Moneygall, Ireland in 2011 where he visited his ancestral home – and received a warm welcome from the local pub – President Obama was gifted a special drawing of his Irish great-great-great grandfather, Falmouth Karney. 🍀 To all those celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, the O’Bama Foundation wishes you a joyful celebration!

What an unforgettable day for Hyde Park Academy students! We were honored to welcome Donnell Digby, a proud South Side entrepreneur and community leader, for an empowering Futures Series session. 🙌 The day kicked off with a tour of Digby’s event venue, The Woodlawn, where local chefs & businesses shine! Then, we explored the iconic South Shore Cultural Center, where students heard from cultural experts including Chicago Park District's Andrea C Adams and Dr. Carol Adams. Students then enjoyed a delicious lunch at Digby’s restaurant Nafsi – the first Black-owned fine-dining spot in the once whites-only South Shore Cultural Center! 🍽️✨During lunch, we got to hear from the talented Chef Dondee Robinson (who has cooked for President Obama!) and General Manager Amatziah Snipes. Through creativity, mentorship, and exposure to career paths students may not have been considering – our Futures Series program is helping students on the South Side of Chicago dream of even brighter futures.

  • 60 years ago today, hundreds of activists courageously marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, fighting for Black Americans' right to vote. Their unwavering commitment to justice was instrumental in the passage of the Voting Rights Act, proving the immense power of ordinary people coming together to create lasting change. To encourage the next generation of leaders to pick up the baton of change, the exterior of the Obama Presidential Center Museum will feature words from President Obama’s speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches. The quote that will be embedded into the structure of the building draws a meaningful line between the history that made the Obamas’ story possible and the ongoing work the Obama Foundation is doing to inspire the next generation of changemakers.

  • As Black History Month comes to a close, we’re celebrating the remarkable journey of Ronnie Mosley, Chicago’s youngest alderman. Last semester, he inspired students at Hyde Park Academy during one of our Futures Series sessions sharing his powerful story and invaluable lessons. During his talk, Alderman Mosley emphasized the importance of being present, listening to the community, and using creativity to turn challenges into lasting solutions. He also spoke about the power of self-belief, how faith can overcome fear, and the courage to step up – no matter the obstacles.

  • This Black History Month, we're celebrating Julia Perkins, the founder of Studio Yogi in the city’s South Shore neighborhood. Julia’s journey began when she discovered yoga in her fifties to manage osteoarthritis. After realizing many studios didn’t accommodate people with physical limitations, she opened Studio Yogi to create an inclusive, welcoming space for all. Julia’s dedication is shaping South Shore’s future, one mindful breath at a time. 🌟 Read her story: https://lnkd.in/gBk3tv-T
