Amanda Johnston shares how wastewater testing can aid Indigenous communities in addressing substance abuse. "Substance abuse is a pressing issue that affects many of our Indigenous communities, posing a threat to our cultural values and the health of our people. As a One Yukon Coalition (OYC) Board Director, I am deeply committed to the well-being of communities and preserving traditional ways of life. In recent years, wastewater testing has emerged as a powerful tool for understanding and addressing the challenges of substance abuse in a way that is respectful of our traditions and values." Last week, our epidemiologist Justine Aman attended the EDAR7 conference in beautiful Montreal, Quebec. Here's what she had to say: "I have had the chance to soak in cutting-edge insights and network with brilliant minds from around the world. Excited to bring this wealth of knowledge back to One Yukon Coalition and apply what I’ve learned to drive our mission forward. Grateful for this enriching experience!" "The discussions around the One Health Framework have been particularly enlightening, emphasizing a holistic approach to health, community collaboration, and respect for the environment." Why is attending this conference important, you ask? EDAR7 is all about antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR is a serious public health threat that compromises the effective prevention and treatment of an ever-increasing range of infections caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses, and fungi. Invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) and pneumococcal disease (IPD) are examples of AMR infections that disproportionately impact certain populations and communities in northern and remote areas. Stay tuned as we continue to integrate these insights into our work and strive for better health outcomes for all! #OneYukonCoalition #ContinuousLearning #Innovation #AMR #EDAR7
