We love having technical sales folks attend OT SCADA CON! You are doing yourself and your clients a huge favor when you train up on “adjacent” technology and processes - be an expert at your stuff and know enough to be dangerous on others. Your ability to understand your customers and point them in the right direction makes you a far more valuable partner than someone that just “sells” what you have to offer
If there's one thing I wish engineering programs did better is to expand on the opportunities in this space. Having spent many years in this field, it's clear that there's a lot more to our profession than pure technical development. We recently had a conversation with Kent who's been moving up the ranks at Inductive Automation on the sales side which clearly takes a lot more than just technical knowledge. I've certainly had a lot more visibility on these opportunities earlier in my career, so I really appreciate him giving us a glimpse of what him and his team do, and some of his insights from external colleagues. I've had this conversation with different stakeholders in our industry and the reality is such that there's no longer an excuse not to have a highly technical sales force. End-users are deploying fairly complex solutions in their facilities and they need to have the confidence that "sales people" have the knowledge, but also the soft skills to communicate to their technical staff. Would love to hear from others—how did you first learn about sales and business roles in technical industries? Was it through school, mentors, or just trial and error?

Great PLC code makes life easy for maintenance, and no this doesn't mean "going online" to add AFIs and shorts in the logic. 👩⚖️Continuing the debate about writing code that can be debugged by maintenance, are we focusing resources on the right priorities? 👩🏭A common argument for why maintenance needs access to PLC code is troubleshooting a malfunctioning sensor. The typical quick fix? A debounce timer, a bypass, or a temporary logic tweak to get production back up and running. Key word: temporary. Traditionally this means a technician must: ✅ Find the right laptop ✅ Open the correct VM and software version ✅ Navigate the upload/download process without mishaps ✅ Cross-reference logic to find where to apply the "fix" ✅ Document the change (hopefully) and follow up to remove it later 👨💻 Or, we take a pro-active approach on the dev side and write the code to handle these scenarios directly in the HMI. A tech could simply navigate to the affected sensor, adjust its configuration, and move on. ✔ No PLC code changes ✔ Actions logged automatically (e.g. John Doe updated 1033OL to ManOn on Mar 18, 2025, at 14:38) ✔ Follow-ups can be automated (tickets, reminders, etc.) 🕵 Not only does this simplify life for maintenance, but it also eliminates the need for process owners to track who’s making what changes in PLC code (especially important given the lack of version control in many PLC environments). 💰 But dev time costs moneys! So does downtime, which scenario creates more potential for downtime? Plus, with modern PLC environments, creation of this code is a one time cost (and a minimal one at that for something simple like this). One Function Block, one Visualization object. Below is a simple example of this concept in action. It uses an enumeration with text list support in a drop-down menu to select the operating configuration of a discrete input. I’ve also implemented this using radio buttons on other platforms-some may prefer that approach, and honestly, I might as well. The exact implementation isn’t the key point; what matters is making it intuitive for maintenance. Worried about manually entering all those descriptions? Fear not! In a real implementation, these labels are dynamically generated based on what the input is part of. In this case, a motor that’s part of an auger, which is part of a bin. #plcprogramming #codesys #agtech #agautomation #systemintegration #ladderlogic #structuredtext

Using sequencing logic in a PLC is a pretty powerful way to build complex processes. It is commonly used in motion control, recipe management, and anything where you need to meet a certain set of conditions at any given step before moving on to the next operation. I have used it quite a few times in my career for various applications and found it makes troubleshooting operations much easier than trying to program without using a sequencer. Typically I track what step I am in using an integer value, incrementing it when the conditions are met to move to the next step. In this tutorial Tim Wilborne goes through how to build sequencing logic in Connected Components Workbench. Highly recommend checking it out! https://lnkd.in/eTp2a53f
