Reducing the per-part cost of additive through real-time inspection

About us

Phase3D is on a mission to empower the additive manufacturing (AM) industry through trusted inspection technologies. Our core products, Fringe Research and Fringe Qualification, provide customers with the confidence to reduce lead time, increase machine utilization, and ensure build quality by creating heightmaps of every layer. Whether you are doing research, working on product or process development, manufacturing production parts, or performing part qualification, Phase3D's data will help you. Our product is rooted in taking objective heightmaps using structured light, a well-known and understood inspection technology. Fringe Research and Fringe Qualification measures every layer of every build, identifies anomalies, and supports you and your engineers or technicians to improve your process and products. Unlike anyone else working on this problem, Phase3D’s inspection technology removes the guessing from the equation. Fringe Research and Fringe Qualification use NO artificial intelligence or machine learning to measure and identify anomalies. The heightmap is fully unit based, in microns, repeatable, calibratable, and has known uncertainty. Let’s work together to improve your process. ATTENTION TO ALL AM USERS! We just published a new case study showcasing how Fringe Inspection™ solved a critical powder dropping issues for one of our aerospace customers. The customer was experiencing frustrating qualification failures with their PBF parts due to inconsistent powder deposition that standard imaging simply could not detect reliably. After implementing our Fringe Inspection™ system, they immediately identified the root cause - powder accumulating on the recoater assembly was dropping onto the build surface during printing. By providing real-time, high-resolution heightmaps of every layer, we helped them implement a simple yet effective solution that reduced their waist by over 90%! This case study demonstrates the power of proactive quality inspection for additive manufacturing. Read the full success story here: https://lnkd.in/dG8hKb4X For all those at AMUG (Additive Manufacturing Users Group) or RAPID + TCT over the coming weeks, come find our team to learn more. #AdditiveManufacturing #QualityControl #FringeInspection #AerospaceManufacturing #3DPrinting

Executive Leader in Metal AM - 17 years since my first failed print and I have been driving industrialization of the technology ever since...

How accurate is accurate enough for measuring in-process anomalies? It’s a question we’ve been tackling at Phase3D, and here’s my take: if something is sticking up 500 microns in the build area, does it really matter if it’s 525 microns or 475 microns? The key is to take action before the anomaly impacts the build.   Using Fringe Inspection, we measured a 500-micron gauge block and found about a 5% relative error across the full plate. While this is well within the tolerance range for identifying actionable anomalies, it highlighted some interesting challenges.   One issue is finding gauge blocks that work well with our system. We currently use a translucent Mitutoyo gauge block to avoid shiny surfaces, but this has its own quirks—our system can even pick up the writing on the back of the block, adding measurement noise, seen below in the bottom right image. The challenge in qualifying our process, as you can see below, the gage block is causing measurement noise because you can read the text on the heightmap.    Ideally, we’d test with something more representative of real AM process issues, like a 100-micron block. However, finding a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)-certified, non-shiny gauge block at this scale has proven tricky.   Does anyone know of a smaller gauge block that fits the bill? I’d love to hear your thoughts!   #AdditiveManufacturing #MeasurementAccuracy

  • See Fringe Inspection™ live at 𝐑𝐀𝐏𝐈𝐃 + 𝐓𝐂𝐓 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 in Detroit! Visit us at 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝟏𝟒𝟐𝟔 from April 8-10. Join us for live demos of Fringe Inspection™ on our on-site test rig and experience how real-time measurement is transforming defect detection, process control, and quality assurance across aerospace, defense, medical, and energy industries. Why does this matter? Because in AM, every layer counts. Undetected flaws can derail production, drive up costs, or worse - lead to critical failures. Real-time inspection catches issues the moment they arise, enabling immediate corrections and delivering reliable, high-quality parts with less waste and rework. Stop by Booth 1426 and see how Phase3D is changing the game with data, not just images. #Phase3D #RAPIDTCT #FringeInspection #AdditiveManufacturing #3DPrinting #QualityControl #ProcessMonitoring #DefectDetection #InSituInspection
