The RTC is the leading coalition for organizations working to decarbonize process heat and buildings.
About us
Energy used for heating and cooling comprises approximately 50 percent of total global final energy demand and 39 percent of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. In the United States, heating and cooling account for more than 25 percent of total energy use across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors at a cost of $270 billion annually. Despite its large energy and carbon footprint and its significant potential to reduce carbon emissions, the use of renewable energy for heating and cooling applications, including biomass, biogas, geothermal, landfill gas, renewable electrification, renewable hydrogen, and solar thermal, has received relatively little attention compared with renewable electricity. The Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC) serves as the leading coalition for organizations that are committed to scaling up renewable heating and cooling at their facilities and dramatically cutting carbon emissions. RTC members recognize the growing demand and necessity for renewable heating and cooling and the urgent need to meet this demand in a manner that delivers sustainable, cost-competitive options at scale. The Renewable Thermal Collaborative is facilitated by the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, David Gardiner and Associates, and World Wildlife Fund.

Last week, the RTC hosted two breakfast events in Washington, DC: 🔋 Charged Up: Changes Needed to Reap the Benefits of Thermal Energy Storage, co-hosted with Long Duration Energy Storage Council (LDES Council) 💡 Electrifying American Manufacturing: Fostering Industry, Utility, and PUC Collaboration These sessions featured in-depth discussions on the barriers to industrial #electrification with technologies like thermal batteries and heat pumps, and identified pathways for policymakers, regulators, and utilities to support projects while ensuring benefits for end users and the #grid. Key takeaways include: ⚡ Electrified thermal technologies, such as industrial heat pumps and thermal batteries, are innovative and efficient solutions for industry. ⚡ Access to real-time electricity pricing can support widespread electrification by increasing cost parity with fossil gas and enabling flexible loads to benefit the grid. ⚡ To support implementation of these technologies and realize their benefits, utilities and regulators must consider them in planning and tariff designs. More deployment news, this time from RTC Member AstraZeneca. More clean heat!
We've partnered with Future Biogas to bring the UK’s first unsubsidised biomethane plant online. This milestone marks a key step towards achieving our goal of 100% renewable energy across our global operations by the end of 2025. The Moor Bioenergy plant will produce 100 GWh of renewable energy annually, displacing approx. 18,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions from fossil gas per year and providing clean heat for our UK R&D and manufacturing. We celebrated this milestone with Dr. Miatta Fahnbulleh, MP, Minister for Energy Consumers. Innovations like this are vital to drive sustainability across UK life sciences. 🔍 Learn more about our sustainable journey: https://learn.az/6048Lbbpj #WhatScienceCanDo
