Nonpartisan nonprofit providing young women with the confidence, capabilities, and connections to lead in politics.

About us

Running Start was created because young women remain only a tiny fraction of the elected officials and candidates for public office in the United States. To truly build the percentage of women leading in politics, we must get more women to run at a young age. Running Start introduces young women to role models, talks to young women about the importance of politics in their lives, and gives them the encouragement and skills to pursue a career in political leadership. What We Do Train young women to run for political office. Why We Do It Less than 1 in 4 elected leaders in the United States are women. Even fewer are young women. For instance, just 7 women in Congress today are under 40 years old. When women run, they win at the same rates as men, but there aren’t enough women running for office. Research shows that women don’t run for a host of reasons, but a key reason is lack of confidence. Running Start gives young women the skills they need so that they can feel confident on their path to politics. How We Do It Running Start has six training programs for high school, college-aged, and recently graduated young women. They are: the Young Women’s Political Leadership Program; the Summit; Elect Her; the Running Start / Walmart Star Fellowship; the Running Start Internship Program; and Run with Running Start. Each program combines skills training from experts (in fundraising, public speaking, messaging, networking, and campaign team building) and mentoring by women in politics. We find that our program participants leave with the confidence to run now (for student government and local office) and the desire and skills to run in the future!

  • All it takes is one Elect Her workshop to see the change in someone's perception of their own qualifications to run. Love seeing these stats from our partner at Meredith College!

What an incredible event last week! A huge thank you to everyone who attended our Elect Her event on Thursday! Your energy and engagement made it a huge success. We were especially grateful to have the support of our elected officials, including Mayor Janet Cowell, NC Secretary of State Elaine Marshall , Former NC Auditor Jessica Holmes, and Representative @Donna McDowell White took the time to join us and be part of these important conversations. Events like this remind us of the power of community and the importance of civic engagement. Thank you to all who came out, participated, and helped make this gathering so impactful. Looking forward to continuing this momentum together! Meredith College #socialworkinaction #socialworkmonth #womeningovernment

Running Start has played a pivotal role in shaping my personal and professional journey in D.C. since transferring from community college, so I’m sure you can imagine how thrilled I am to have been selected for this year’s Running Start Next Step cohort! The Next Step program is a professional development initiative for Running Start alumni, designed to advance our political and civic leadership careers. Through training sessions, mentorship opportunities, and leadership development, we’ll gain the skills and networks needed to make a greater impact. Select alumni will also have the opportunity to attend the Reykjavik Global Forum in Iceland this November! I look forward to learning from and connecting with more inspiring, driven young women from across the country throughout this experience. Huge thanks to Susannah Wellford for this incredible opportunity and I am beyond excited for all that’s ahead! #RunningStart #NextStep

Running Start has taught me how to proudly tell my story and not let circumstances define me but rather to believe that I can shape my own path. I went from being a small town girl from Covington, KY, in a low-income household facing adversity, to growing up and becoming a first-generation college graduate, the first in my family to join the Peace Corps, travel abroad, and work in policy. I am beyond excited to have been selected for this year’s Running Start #NextStep cohort! The Next Step program is a professional development initiative for Running Start alumni, designed to advance our political and civic leadership careers through training sessions, mentorship opportunities, and leadership development. I couldn’t have made it this far without the mentorship and guidance of such inspiring women: Susannah Wellford, Serena Saunders, Melissa Richmond, Vasundhara Kamath and Jessica Kelly. Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do.

Did you know that a mere 28% of the 118th Congress are women legislators, and an even smaller number, 11%, are women of color? Our partners at Running Start are working to address that by training the next generation of young women running for public office. Their impact has been truly phenomenal, with 94% of program alums continuing to “pay it forward” in their own communities and as much as one-third of them running for office after graduating from the program. Here are some examples: - Savannah Lee graduated from the Congressional Fellowship and used her social media and communications skills to gain an online audience of over 27,0000 sharing content on how young women can break into foreign and public policy careers.   - Madeleine Tofaeono-Galo, a Running Start leader, hosted a training for the Pacific Islander Student Alliance in the Pacific Northwest.  - Rana Abdelhamid started her involvement with Running Start when she was 16, and since then, has founded a nonprofit organization that trains women in self-defense, and also the first women’s center in Astoria, Queens.
