More than 2 in 3 of America’s students are unable to read proficiently by the end of third grade. The situation is even more dire in rural areas, where access to books and educational resources is severely limited. More than 60% of low-income families can't afford to have books in their homes. But there's hope 🌟 Earlier this week, Save the Children US and longtime partner Scholastic, together with our host The Rockefeller Foundation, held a private discussion to discuss what it takes to tackle this issue head-on. We shared why we are all excited about “United States of Readers,” an initiative to ensure every child has the opportunity to choose and own their own books, develop strong reading skills, and encourage the support of teachers and adults in their life. Betsy Zorio Chapple Osborne-Arnold, PhD, LeAnn Myers, Judy Newman, and Zia Khan talked about: - How we need innovative, forward-thinking solutions to address inequities in literacy in rural America - What it looks like when a child has access to books and experiences the joy of reading. - The importance of choice to truly develop a love for reading - Save the Children’s approach to partnering with schools to fill critical gaps for kids based on each community’s unique needs. - Why this program is so special, being built on evidence, designed to scale and as Zia mentioned, bringing the right partners to create something bigger. His image of building a quilt together with our respective sections of strength truly resonated with me. If you are looking for ways to make a real difference in the lives of children in rural America, join us! Together with Scholastic, we can combine our strengths to bridge the literacy gap and give every child the chance to succeed! 💪📖
