Student data breaches aren’t just a hypothetical risk. They’re happening. Last year, a major EdTech platform exposed millions of student records, including social security numbers and birthdates. Incidents like these don’t just put students at risk of identity theft, they also drive up cybersecurity costs for districts and erode trust with families. With so much sensitive data at stake, district leaders need to look beyond just features and functionality when choosing technology partners. Security should be a top priority. A few key questions to ask: - How does the platform comply with FERPA, COPPA, and other privacy laws? - What encryption and security measures are in place to protect student data? - Does the provider share or sell student information? - What happens to student data if the district stops using the platform? Data security isn’t just an IT concern... It’s a district-wide responsibility.
