About us

Sound Transit is transforming how the Central Puget Sound region moves by planning, building and operating regional transit systems that give millions of riders an alternative to sitting in traffic. As the agency prepares for nearly a million new Central Puget Sound residents by 2040, transit services are expanding to meet today’s growing needs. Thanks to voter approval of the largest mass transit expansion in the region’s history, Sound Transit’s light rail system will grow to four times the size it is today. When complete, the 116-mile light rail system will stretch from Everett to Tacoma and connect major job and population centers in Seattle including South Lake Union, Seattle Center, Ballard and West Seattle. It will also extend east to Bellevue, Redmond, Issaquah and Mercer Island. As Sound Transit grows, we seek innovative, technical and creative professionals who are ready to come on board and make a difference. Career opportunities include information technology, finance, construction management and engineering positions. Apply today at www.soundtransit.org/jobs.

  • Did you know that Sound Transit’s efforts go beyond delivering public transit? 🚇 Our transit-oriented development (TOD) program fosters vibrant, livable communities near transit by putting land needed for construction and staging to use as opportunities for development. 🏙️ 🛠️ We recently celebrated the groundbreaking of a new TOD project near the Spring District Station! BRIDGE Housing’s project will bring 234 affordable homes to the Eastside on land that was used for construction of the Operations and Maintenance Facility (OMF) East facility. Sound Transit and the City of Bellevue transferred the site to BRIDGE Housing in late 2024 at no cost. This property discount is foundational in supporting the project’s affordable housing outcomes. ✨ Strong partnerships and investment from the City of Bellevue, King County, and A Regional Coalition for Housing (ARCH), Amazon, WA State Department of Commerce, and the Washington State Housing Finance Commission made this project possible. The affordable homes will be for households earning 60% AMI and below—plus, 40 units will be set aside for individuals with developmental disabilities. Convenient access to transit will, connect residents to opportunities across the region, from jobs to schools to parks. 🌳🏞️ Learn more about this exciting effort (at the link in our bio). 🔗 https://ow.ly/gLos50VhFwz

  • At Sound Transit, we're more than just a transit agency — we're a part of transforming lives! ✨ We recently had the honor of hosting a career pathways tour for the House of Matthew, a Tacoma-based organization dedicated to supporting individuals at risk of homelessness. During the tour, 12 students from their Homeward Bound program had the chance to learn more about the agency's construction and fare engagement career pathways. This collaboration is just one example of how Sound Transit is working to build stronger communities and provide meaningful career opportunities. Together, we can make a lasting impact! 🚍💙 🔗Read the full story here: https://ow.ly/6pjn50VfU4q

This International Women’s Day, we’re honoring the incredible collaboration behind INHERITANCE—a beautiful public art piece at Kent/Des Moines Station. Created by an all-women team, including Michelle de la Vega, STart (Sound Transit Art) Program Manager Ashley Long, and Chelsea Gaddy from Force/Collide, this sculpture celebrates community heritage and the power of women’s leadership in public art. See how this piece came together and the story behind it: https://ow.ly/nfmm50VebrS

We are doing more than delivering transit. 🏡 Our transit-oriented development (TOD) program fosters vibrant, livable communities around transit by creating opportunities for development and affordable housing near our stations.    The Rainier Valley Affordable Homeownership Initiative is doing just that. Sound Transit transferred ten properties to Seattle’s Office of Housing at no cost in 2020. They then partnered with Habitat for Humanity International to realize a vision for seven affordable homes on the first three of the sites to be developed. These will give seven families the opportunity to put down roots and build generational wealth in homes that are affordable to them.    You can learn more about this project and our other TOD projects at https://ow.ly/wSYi50VcgC4.

  • Join the AGC of Washington and Sound Transit leaders for a 2025 kick-off event hosted at the AGC Seattle office. Meet Terri Mestas, Deputy CEO and the Capital Delivery Program Executives. • Black History Month at Sound Transit wraps up with an annual soul food feast. Food is an integral part of Black culture that brings people together to honor traditions and even resist oppression. Throughout history, food has meant sustenance as well as a means to preserve cultural identity, create a sense of belonging and pass down traditions from generation to generation. Here are a few photos from the annual celebratory Soul Potluck hosted by Sound Transit Blacks Empowering Success in Transit (BEST) employee resource group.

  • 🌿✨ New public art at Auburn Sounder Station! “Companion Garden” by RYAN! Feddersen is now on display, blending culture, nature, and healing in a beautiful tribute to the region’s indigenous heritage. This stunning installation, created in collaboration with STart (Sound Transit Art Program), features indigenous plants like sčiʔyu (Strawberry), taqa (Salal), and sx̌ʷi (Oregon Grape). The design draws from Plateau Pictorial Beadwork traditions, creating a vibrant and thought-provoking piece that connects commuters with nature and cultural history. Check out the full story behind this inspiring project, from its design to the collaborative process with the community and Sound Transit teams! 💫 https://lnkd.in/gNMamW2e #publicart #artintransit #publictransit #localartist #nativeart

  • 🐍 2025 is the Year of the Snake, and #LunarNewYear celebrations are in full swing across our region! At Sound Transit, employees from the SPAM employee resource group joined the festivities by preparing dishes rich with symbolic meaning, from egg rolls that represent wealth and prosperity, dumplings that symbolize hope and fortune (the more you eat, the more prosperous your year), and noodles that signify a wish for longevity and good health. Food will also take center stage at Seattle’s Chinatown-International District’s Lunar New Year Celebration on Feb. 22 (and the 1 Line is a great way to get there!). Yesterday, Sound Transit’s Blacks Empowering Success in Transit Employee Resource Group (BEST) raised the Pan-African flag in honor of Black History Month—a powerful emblem of resilience, unity, and self-determination. As it soared, so did our collective commitment to truth, justice, and the legacy of those who paved the way. Black history isn’t just about remembering the past—it’s about shaping the future. The day's events also featured the singing of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” in front of Union Station, immediately followed by employees gathering in the Ruth Fisher Boardroom to hear about Black activism in transit with Elmer Dixon. Thank you to everyone who stood in solidarity. ♥️🖤💚 A video of the flag raising can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gACaUzSz
