Sector-Specific Drupal Offerings: The Future of Open Source Success Not too long ago, agencies built their own installation profiles and Drupal distributions, tailoring them exclusively for their clients. While these solutions took time and effort to build, only a handful of clients could access them—limited to a single agency. But with Drupal CMS now offering a robust readymade product, the natural next step is industry-specific, open-source solutions that everyone—agencies, developers, and organizations—can use and improve. 🚀 JD Leonard's Member Platform is a great example of this shift—a Drupal-native portal designed specifically for membership organizations and NGOs. By creating sector-specific solutions like this, we can move away from bloated, one-size-fits-all DXPs and instead deliver focused, ready-to-use platforms that are easier to adopt and refine. 🌍 Imagine the possibilities: ✔ A media distribution built for newspapers, magazines, and news portals—ready to rival Jamstack and WordPress ✔ A suite of solutions tailored for higher education, healthcare, and nonprofits, making Drupal more accessible ✔ A thriving ecosystem of community-driven Drupal products that encourage new developers and non-developers to join the Drupal movement We need more collaborative, open-source offerings that benefit the entire community. JD Leonard has taken the first step—who’s next? • 🚀 Building Community-Driven Drupal Solutions with JD Leonard 🎤 With nearly two decades of experience, JD Leonard has worn many hats in the Drupal ecosystem—developer, consultant, event organizer, and now project lead for Member Platform, a new initiative empowering small membership organizations. In an insightful interview with Alka Elizabeth at The Drop Times, JD shares his journey from revamping a student government website in 2006 to shaping Drupal meetups and camps in New York and Austin. He dives into: ✅ The challenges of sustaining open-source projects ✅ Why local meetups are key to Drupal’s future ✅ How Member Platform fills a crucial gap for membership-based organizations JD also discusses how collaboration is essential for Drupal product success, how Member Platform compares to CiviCRM, and why Drupal needs more community-driven products. 👥 Whether you're a developer, organizer, or Drupal enthusiast, there's something in this conversation for you. • We want to see this happening hundreds of times across the world and we need your help. 👉 Are you in? We can make this happen as a community. it is just a matter of finding more people like Anoop John and Sibu Stephen and Vy Nguyen 👉 The question is, Are you one? It is really straightforward. Hear this out. 🔹 Step 1: First you believe that this will happen 🔹 Step 2: You decide to do something about this 🔹 Step 3: You find cities where there are no Drupal meetups currently 🔹 Step 4: You reach out and connect to a few people from that city who have Drupal in their LinkedIn profile 🔹 Step 5: You ask them if they are interested in attending a Drupal Meetup in that city or thereabout. 🔹 Step 6: Repeat 4, 5 until you find at least one person who says yes. The more the merrier. 🔹 Step 7: Ask if the person is interested in contributing to make that Meetup a reality. 🔹 Step 8: Repeat 4, 5, 6, 7 until you find at least one person who says yes. The more the merrier. That is it, the meetup will happen 💯 If hundreds of people across the world start doing this, then starting 100 new meetups across the world is very very very very very straightforward. 👉 Are you the one who is going to take that first step? Come join us in this movement. We are not going to rest until we solve the maker-taker imbalance problem in the Drupal community. We believe that it is doable. If we can find 1000 true believers, then we can make it happen. 👉 Are you one of them? Reach out to us if you are. We would love to talk you 💙

Had a great conversation with Sibu Stephen. Sibu is mobilizing people around Edmonton, Canada to work towards starting a local Drupal meetup. He has already found people who are interested in attending and also in helping with organizing the event. The Edmonton Drupal meetup is tentatively planned for May 1st. Special thanks to to Sibu, Vy Nguyen and all the people helping make this Edmonton Drupal Meetup happen. Drupal people in and around Edmonton, please reach out to Sibu, Vy or one of us at TDT. As mentioned in an earlier post, The Drop Times team is reaching out to people in cities where we see potential to organize a new Drupal meetup or revive an meetup that used to come together. We are looking to help start (or restart) 100 such new local groups across the world in the next two years. If you are a Drupaler in a city where you don't have a Drupal meetup and you think there is an opportunity to start a local meetup, please reach out to me or one of us at the TDT team and we can help mobilize more people and help organize the meetup. Contributing to the growth of a global community like the Drupal community takes a lot of effort. It is a lot of hard work but it is also very rewarding work. If you would like to join us in this journey, please reach out to me or anybody from the TDT team. Onward and forward, together as one!

  • In a recent open letter, Josh Koenig, Co-Founder & Chief Strategy Officer at Pantheon, addresses the pivotal moment facing the Drupal community. With the end-of-life for Drupal 7 and the emergence of DrupalCMS, he emphasizes the need to reassess Drupal's role in a shifting digital landscape. Koenig critiques the crumbling Digital Experience Platform (DXP) model, noting that the market's fragmentation contradicts the original one-stop-shop hypothesis. He advocates for Drupal to leverage its modularity and robust data capabilities to serve as an "agile business driver" and provide large organizations with "freedom within a framework." This approach would allow for continuous improvement and adaptability without excessive technical debt. As DrupalCon Atlanta approaches, this conversation is both timely and crucial for the community's future. To delve deeper into Koenig's insights and join the discussion, find the link in the comments. #DrupalFuture #DigitalStrategy #OpenSourceInnovation #DXP #DrupalConAtlanta
