Thank you to members of the California Congressional delegation for touring UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals in San Francisco and speaking about the importance of maintaining federal funding for Medicaid! Our hospitals treat more Medicaid patients than any other health system in San Francisco, with 100,000+ UCSF patients and 14 million Californians, including children, relying on public health insurance to receive vital care each year. • David is celebrating the 15-year anniversary of his heart transplant — please congratulate him! In 2005, David developed various health problems after experiencing complications during an angiogram at another facility, and several years later, he had a triple bypass surgery. His heart was failing, and he eventually ended up at UCSF. Our team placed him on the heart transplant list in late 2009. On March 17, 2010 (St. Patrick's Day 🍀), David received the call he’d been waiting for: A donor heart was available. He had his transplant the same day. David is now doing great, despite subsequent treatment for skin cancer and a chronic inflammatory disease that affected his lung function. All of that care has taken place at UCSF! David has loved spending time with his family over the past 15 years! He saw his youngest son graduate medical school and become a physician, and he's a doting grandfather to his three grandkids. David and his wife have been on a road trip quest to see every national park and state in the U.S., and they plan on visiting their last two states (North Carolina and South Carolina) soon!

  • We're proud to be among the first U.S. hospitals to receive a prestigious new pulmonary care designation! COPD Foundation has designated us a Bronchiectasis and NTM Care Center, based on the depth and breadth of our services for patients with bronchiectasis and nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease. “CCN designation will provide further resources to Bay Area and Northern California patients, providing the opportunity for more educational resources to individuals and their caregivers, support systems and clinical trial opportunities,” UCSF's Dr. B. Shoshana Zha says. https://ucsfh.org/4iLxGNy

Hans headed home to Fresno last week, after 141 days in the hospital and 109 days with a Total Artificial Heart! Total Artificial Heart (TAH) is a device that temporarily supports function on both sides of the heart, while patients with heart failure wait for a heart transplant. Hans had a heart attack in 2024 and declined very rapidly. He came to UCSF in October and spent several days on ECMO heart support before receiving his artificial heart on Nov. 18. After almost five months in the hospital, he returned home, where he’ll be using the artificial heart until a transplant is possible! Good luck and congratulations, Hans!

  • 🌺 Mahalo, Jonathan! After 25 years at UCSF, beloved lung transplant nurse practitioner, Jonathan Pascual, is retiring! Jonathan joined us from Oahu as an ICU nurse in 2000 and went on to graduate from the UCSF School of Nursing in 2013, with his nurse practitioner degree. He has since worked with our Lung Transplant Program. Even though he’s retiring, Jonathan plans to travel between California and Hawaii, while continuing his treatment for terminal stage 4 mediastinal paraganglioma, which he's been fighting at UCSF since 2022. He has exciting trips planned, including one to Japan in May. Jonathan is an avid triathlete and recently ran the Napa Valley Half Marathon and is currently training for the Wildflower Triathlon in May. Thank you, Jonathan, for your dedication and compassion over the years. We will miss you! 🌺

  • Congratulations to Dr. Carolyn Sangokoya, founder and executive director of the UCSF Women Physician-Scientists Supergroup and a recipient of the 2024 Chancellor Award for the Advancement of Women! Dr. Sangokoya drew inspiration from early experiences inside her father’s chemistry laboratory to eventually launch her own lab at the UCSF Broad Stem Cell Center. “I’d really like to be a beacon and an inspiration to others who want to pursue these careers,” she says. https://ucsfh.org/3Dyd2Sa #WomensMonth

  • We're proud of our new sustainable multi-use anesthesia breathing circuits! The healthcare sector is responsible for ~8.5% of national greenhouse gas emissions, and we're committed to reducing UCSF Health's emissions from anesthesia gases and supply waste in operating rooms. "Sustainability-focused initiatives often seem like an added work burden, but they can be integrated into everything we do on a daily basis," medical sustainability director Seema Gandhi says. "In fact, they improve quality of care and efficiency." Learn more ➡️ https://ucsfh.org/41JeBWT
