About us
The Department of Defense activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. The DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense, to plan for and conduct special operations.

“Skyraider II represents not just a new platform, but a modular solution to our national security needs,” said AFSOC Commander Lt. Gen. Michael Conley. “It will redefine how we approach joint campaigning, crisis response and the evolving landscape of modern warfare.” The Skyraider II officially joins the Air Force Special Operations Command fleet with the delivery of the first missionized aircraft at Hurlburt Field, Florida.
AFSOC welcomes the Skyraider II, the newest powerhouse in our arsenal! A delivery ceremony was held at Hurlburt Field to welcome the first missionized variant, marking the start of a new era in aircraft modularity. While the Skyraider II may have had humble beginnings as an agricultural airframe, SOF, as always, takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary. This mission validated the U.S. and ROK combined capability of establishing a landing zone on a highway, landing an MC-130J in the established zone, finding and recovering injured personnel, and safely transporting those personnel to medical facilities to receive the care they need. The rapid response of Air Force Special Operations Command's capabilities and Air Commando mobility, including the C-146 and MC-130J, are working with U.S. Army Special Operations Command Special Forces to deliver critical aid and support to our Thailand partners. SOF in the Pacific with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command maintain military readiness with our #FriendsAlliesPartners to ensure integration and timely crisis response actions.
U.S. Indo-Pacific Command military personnel continue to work alongside Thai military and first responders near the collapsed State Audit Office building in Bangkok, which fell after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake affected Thailand and it's neighboring countries on March 28, 2025. Disaster emergencies, both natural and man-made, remain an ever-present threat to life, security, stability and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific. The United States providing humanitarian assistance to our Thai allies saves lives, alleviates suffering during crises and fosters stability across the region.
