President Trump recently signed a slate of executive orders (EOs), many of which endanger the health, well-being, and safety of underserved communities, including transgender people. These orders have sought to redefine sex and sex-based discrimination for federal policy purposes to exclude transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people (Executive Order 14168) and ban best-practice medical care for transgender people under age 19 (Executive Order 14187). Many of the provisions in these EOs cannot take effect immediately, as implementation often requires regulatory rulemaking, administrative guidance, and other procedural steps that may take months or years. The policy directives outlined in these EOs, however, are already having swift and significant effects on the everyday lives of millions of people. This article for Health Affairs, co-written (with others) by Caroline Medina, Director of Policy and Sara Mar, Advocacy and Comms Strategist, at The Institute for Health Research & Policy at Whitman-Walker, examines the potential impacts of these orders on transgender health across key policy areas. Whitman-Walker appreciates Sara G. and Alex Orfinger of the Washington Business Journal for profiling Heather Aaron EdD, MPH, the CEO of the Whitman-Walker Health System, as part of their CEO Spotlight series. In the profile, Dr. Aaron elaborates on the experience she brings — from working diligently in community to address the AIDS crisis and then overseeing the state of Connecticut's public health response to the Covid-19 pandemic — to one of DC’s most well-known health providers. She also talks about her childhood in Trinidad and Tobago, and how her parents emphasized academic achievement. Outside of work, look for her to be tending to the roses and enjoying the beauty around her. And, in terms of challenging climate in which we find ourselves, Dr. Aaron weighs in on how the Whitman-Walker Health System is positioning itself to ensure that life-saving research continues, especially in Southeast DC. On this #WhitmanWalkerWednesday, we would like to recognize #EY for sponsoring our Going the Extra Mile event on Thurs., May 8th, which raises funds for our legal services program that provides free assistance to 3,000 people every year. We want to thank leaders from EY who have strongly supported us over the last few years, including Joachim Roski, Angel Estrada, and Stacy Lindsay. Among others, they have worked with their colleagues on securing financial contributions, organized expert pro-bono services benefiting Whitman-Walker, recruited their colleagues as volunteers for Whitman-Walker events, leveraged their company’s expertise in briefing our leaders and boards on critical issues, and introduced their colleagues to Whitman-Walker through worksite-based lunch & learn sessions, as well as tours and discussions at our Max Robinson Center. In short, the EY team always go the extra mile for us—and we love the community spirit we have built together. In fact, they recently gathered friends and supporters of our research and policy institute to talk about exciting new work ahead of us (see photo). PHOTO: from left, Dr. Kellan E. Baker, Executive Director of the Institute for Health Research & Policy at Whitman-Walker; Dr. Ann Bonham, Board Chair; Dr. Joachim Roski of EY and event host; Dr. Heather Aaron EdD, MPH, CEO of Whitman-Walker Health System; and Corie Dacres, Angel Estrada, Sophia Greathouse, and Kevin J. Simison, all of EY. More info on Going the Extra Mile here: https://lnkd.in/eFeYSnMg

Hello! We encourage you to listen to Ted Miller, our Interim Executive Director of the Whitman-Walker, follow along with his flipcharts, and please open your wallets and make a donation before 2024 comes to a close! #whitmanwalker #weseeyou #weneedyou
Are any of you fellow #flipchart devotees? Well, my passion for flip charts inspired my first-ever video on this platform. I use the video to explain that we at Whitman-Walker need 460 more $50 donations to hit our grassroots goal of $50,000--before December 31. Watch the video for 3 flip charts that give the how and why to support our patients. From primary care to legal services to HIV testing, we serve the whole family, from adolescents to their grandparents--and all ages in between. The link to donate is in the comments. Thank you in advance for considering a gift to help the patients we are

This morning, a Homegoing Memorial Service for A. Cornelius Baker was held at the Washington National Cathedral. It was a touching and inspiring service that included wonderful tributes to his legacy and accomplishments as well as a letter from President and Dr. Biden. Cornelius Baker was the Executive Director of Whitman-Walker from 2000-2004 during a time when we needed him most. He was an incredible public health policy expert who advocated for HIV / AIDS testing, care, and research since the early days of the disease. His tireless care for the people and the community will be missed. Rest well now, fearless leader. (Representing Whitman-Walker at the service were Naseema Shafi, CEO of Whitman-Walker Health, Erin Loubier, Vice Presidentof Access & Strategic Initiatives, and Ted Miller, Interim Executive Director of the Whitman-Walker Foundation.)
