Exciting to see startups aiming to use AI to discover chemicals, materials, drugs, etc. Semi companies have taken notice: AMD is investing in and Cadence is acquiring them. Semi/EDA companies have broken out by becoming critical path, whether it’s through critical software, packaging, IP, design kits from foundries, or user communities. Aside from just making it easy to make new materials, these “AI for making X” companies also need to articulate a vision as to how they can establish monopolistic positions in their industries.

A new era of deep tech has emerged. First time funds will raise “unheard of” amounts of capital to fuel next gen deep tech startups - producing outsized, superior returns for LP’s compared to the rest. Prudent investors will act on this data and shift investment strategy as LP’s or risk being left behind savvy wealth managers and CIO’s / FO’s who saw this trend begin 4 years ago.

The ‘help’ VCs offer that founders wish they’d skip : From unsolicited intros to random conference invites 😐! -Making random introductions that weren’t requested -Inviting founders to conferences where the VC is speaking -Providing strategic advice without understanding the startup’s specific context -Conducting frequent check-ins without offering meaningful support -Forwarding articles about competitors -Recommending broad networking connections that aren’t relevant -Offering unsolicited product UX suggestions -Imposing rigid meeting schedules at inconvenient times -Sharing generic industry trends without actionable insights -Sending irrelevant templates or tools that don’t fit the startup’s stage or needs -Offering feedback that feels more critical than constructive -Making broad claims about experience without engaging with the startup’s unique situation For VCs, adding real value means aligning support with the founder’s specific needs and goals. You may have already seen the news that CRV has decided to return some of the money to its Limited Partners (LPs) because they don't see enough good deals to allocate this capital. https://lnkd.in/dUdSBvtV I’d like to explain how venture capital funds work. If you read that a VC fund has raised $500 million, it usually doesn’t mean they have that money immediately in their bank account. Instead, it means that they’ve signed an agreement with LPs, who will transfer the funds gradually as the VC invests in startups. This is a binding obligation for LPs, but there are some nuances. 1. LPs typically allocate only around 1-5% of their assets to venture capital. The rest is invested in other types of assets (public stocks, bonds, real estate, etc.). So, VCs are a relatively small part of an LP's overall portfolio. Even if a fund generates a 10x return (which is quite rare), it won't significantly impact the LPs' financial position. 2. The money that LPs are committed to investing is often tied up in other types of assets. To invest in startups, they would need to sell those assets. If, for example, the public markets drop by 40%, it would be difficult for LPs to sell at a loss just so VCs can invest in startups that have only dropped by 10%. During the lockdown, this led to many emotional discussions between LPs and VCs. To maintain good relationships, VCs often slowed down their investment pace. 3. VCs build relationships with their LPs over many years. They understand that if a crisis hits, the market may drop for 1-2 years, but it will eventually recover. It’s not worth damaging these relationships due to a temporary market downturn. It's better to renegotiate now so that after the crisis, they can raise funds from these same LPs for their next venture. Therefore, if there aren't enough good startups on the market, it’s easier for VCs to return the excess money, especially since this can be done by signing an amendment without transferring funds or incurring additional transaction costs. I’m telling you this so that next time you hear phrases like "VCs sitting on piles of cash" or "VCs have raised historically high dry powder and must invest all this money," you can take them with a grain of salt. Just because we haven’t seen something in our lifetime doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened before. The venture capital market took a significant downturn almost 25 years ago. Back then, I didn’t even know the word "startup" and was focused on finishing school and getting into university :)

In addition to building our own VC practice at AAF Management Ltd., we’ve invested in 37 VCs since 2017. Here is what, I believe, it takes to build a multi-vintage, early-stage, venture franchise: 𝟭- 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀: hyper-focused GPs build longevity and consistency in their businesses. If you pitch LPs saying you will invest in early stage consumer but end up doing late stage consumer that’s a massive red flag. Stay germane to your mandate and strategy. 𝟮- 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: the market is crowded with venture firms, articulate your differentiated value proposition to LPs and founders. Don’t try to be everything to everyone. Focus on 1-2 value propositions to your stakeholders and execute them with excellence and defensibility. 𝟯- 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆-𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: we tell stories everyday. Raising capital for a fund and building your venture firm requires that same story-telling skillset. Tell consistent narratives to the market to help build your own brand as well as your firm’s brand. 𝟰- 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁-𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲: if you possess subject-matter expertise in a certain vertical, domain or industry, you already own a defensible moat. Accentuate that to your advantage when building your firm, raising capital from LPs and winning deals from founders. 𝟱- 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: early stage venture is a highly collaborate asset class. Keep your ego at the door, you will never be able to do everything it takes to build a firm alone. Leverage LPs, partners and founders for deal flow sourcing, diligence and overall industry best practices. 𝟲- 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁-𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁-𝗙𝗶𝘁: in quintessential startup vernacular, ideally find your product-market-fit by the time you launch your second fund. You need product-market-fit before you scale your AUM, grow your team and carry more fiduciary responsibility. 𝟳- 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: early stage VC investing is a marathon. Patience will reward you personally, professionally and financially. Build mental, physical and psychological stamina to endure the inherent ebbs and flows of your entrepreneurial journey. 𝟴- 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺: early stage VC investing is the archetypal long-term financial asset. Think in 10 year increments for your firm’s grand vision, think in 4 years for a given fund’s investment period and think in quarters when reporting material updates on your portfolio to your LPs. 𝟵- 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗻: if instant gratification, short feedback loops and a constant need for reaffirmation is what you are looking for in a career then early stage VC investing will not fulfill you. Have fun building, and as Naval Ravikant once said: "𝙗𝙚 𝙖𝙣 𝙤𝙥𝙩𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣." Finally, and most importantly, be authentic and true to yourself. #firmbuilding #entrepreneurs #VC

Productising novel research is tricky and we shouldn’t need to look further than the current developments writ large in neural tech. Lets look at three recent headlines.   1- Tether.to, a dollar-backed cryptocurrency acquired a $200m controlling stake into Blackrock Neurotech.   2- Neuralink disclosed that its first human brain computer interfaced encountered issues when the threads connecting to Noland’s brain began to retract within a month of surgery.   3- State of Colorado (US) passed a law that protects brain wave data as "sensitive information" under the Colorado Privacy Act.   Such headlines typify early adoption—a dance of hype and apprehension fueled by actors with competing incentives.   My incentive as a VC is to maximise the upside of technology. i.e measured optimist.   Below myself, Allan McCay andTara Hamilton dig into the risk and return of BCI's in this edition of Law Society Journal. #braincomputerinterface #neuroscience #neuralink #venturecapital The Law Society of NSW Read below 👇

It seems inevitable that as the underlying foundation models become more powerful, the LLM players will seek to justify the enormous investment that has gone into training their models by moving "up the stack", and evolve from an API or chat interface, to async agents.
