ASCE just released Bridging the Gap and as Contruction Owners quoted “…production of goods requires reliable energy, clean water, modern transportation systems and dependable ports according to the report. By 2033, the manufacturing sector would lose $1.15 trillion due to inefficient infrastructure if funding reverts back to pre-IIJA levels, compared to $877 billion if current levels continue, a $276 billion difference.” We must keep our infrastructure investment consistent and sustained if we want to continue a strong economic ecosystem.

As someone who has witnessed the flooding at this intersection firsthand, I can’t express how pleased I am to see this flood mitigation study moving forward with the City of Mount Vernon. The frequent backups during storms and high tides aren’t just inconvenient—they’re a persistent reminder of how much our community relies on sustainable solutions. At True Flood Risk, I’m continually inspired by how our unique geolocation intelligence enriches flood maps and models, delivering a more granular and actionable view of flood risk for everyone. My journey with data visualization began nearly 15 years ago during my first foray into GIS tools as part of a major national communications research initiative. That experience sparked my passion for turning complex, abstract concepts into clear, impactful insights, and in this application, helping everyone from residents to decision-makers better understand the challenges, the financial implications and solutions associated with flooding. It’s exciting to see initiatives like this gaining traction. It’s equally inspiring to see insurers, engineering firms, and emergency responders leveraging critical property-level, data-driven insights to address flood risk and create lasting, meaningful impact.

Just came across this record-setting project, and wow—it’s more than just a technical achievement. The James River Crossing in Virginia is a reminder of how engineering can really make a difference for the environment. This project not only set a world record but is also a big win for sustainability, helping protect the Chesapeake Bay and replenishing groundwater. The project used horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to install a massive 5,700-foot wastewater pipeline under the James River—all while keeping shipping traffic flowing. Talk about a team effort! What really struck me is how innovation and teamwork came together to make this possible. It’s a great example of what we strive for every day at RDA Consulting Engineers. The State of Florida has 1,350 miles of coastline (second only to Alaska in coastline length). Proper surveying of these coastlines requires a knowledge of history as well as a knowledge of laws/rules (and an understanding of how they have changed over the years). Did you know that Prestressed Double T's can span over 100 feet? That's right, a FIMA rated Double T can span up to 104 feet! If you're working on a project that requires large spans, such as storm shelters, prestressed double T's might be the best option. There are still serious questions about mass timber's performance, and impulsive mandates, subsidies, and legislation pushing #masstimber will almost certainly increase project costs, constrain our country’s visionary architects, and limit an engineering professional's ability to choose the appropriate construction material for a given project. Those decisions should be left to a building’s owner and the team designing and building it. The government shouldn’t be in the business of mandating things like that.

In the upcoming months, I plan to discuss my journey as a black traffic/transportation engineer and what I have done to get to where I am within my career and consulting business. I will be exposing both the good and bad within our market and what improvements can be made. I will be collecting data and taking polls. I also encourage my peers to add "constructive criticism" on the topics presented but expect to be challenged if you don't come bearing "receipts". So let the discussions begin..... The first discussion will be on the topic of understanding your value to both the public and private sector markets within Traffic and Transportation Engineering.
