Container flows in August surged in Houston and New Orleans, while global demand for crude oil continued to fuel exports through Corpus Christi, Texas.  Port Houston reports 20% rise in container volumes in August Container cargo increased by 20% year over year in Port Houston to 367,653 twenty-foot equivalent units. Port officials said the increase in container movements is normal and not reflective of a surge in imports or exports prior to a possible work stoppage by members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA). More than 25,000 ILA members could walk off the job at ports along the East and Gulf coasts when their employment contract with ports represented by the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) expires at midnight on Monday. While we had positive progress on a number of issues, we were unable to make significant progress on our discussions that focused on a range of technology issues. Unfortunately, the ILA is insisting on an agreement that would move our industry backward by restricting future use of technology that has existed in some of our ports for nearly two decades – making it impossible to evolve to meet the nation’s future supply chain demands. The USMX has been clear that we are not seeking technology that would eliminate jobs. What we need is continued modernization that is essential to improve worker safety, increase efficiency in a way that protects and grows jobs, keeps supply chains strong, and increases capacity that will financially benefit American businesses and workers alike. LNG Becomes Maritime’s Mainstream Maverick Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has sailed ahead as the maritime industry’s favorite alternative fuel in 2024, leaving greener competitors like green methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia struggling to keep up. Despite debates about its long-term environmental credentials, LNG adoption is growing at a pace that few predicted. This year saw LNG-powered vessels surge past 600 globally—an astronomical leap from just 21 ships in 2010. These vessels now account for over 2% of the global fleet, and with robust orderbooks, that figure is expected to double by vessel count and triple by deadweight tonnage in the coming years. Even A.P. Moller-Maersk, long a green-fuel evangelist, hopped on the LNG bandwagon. In a major 2024 pivot, the company announced a fleet modernization program to include 50-60 dual-fuel vessels, primarily gas. It’s a move that signals a pragmatic shift from its “green-fuel-only” mantra. LNG’s appeal isn’t just its market momentum; the fuel boasts a track record of nearly 60 years of safe operations, straightforward transportability, and low environmental risk compared to its alternatives. However, challenges like infrastructure gaps and broader decarbonization ambitions still cast a shadow over its long-term dominance. The prospect of disruption in the East Coast US ports has re-emerged with the International Longshoremen Union (ILA) pulling out of talks with the port employers’ organisation, USMX. The reason given by the ILA for the withdrawal was it had “discovered” that “APM Terminals and Maersk Line are utilizing an Auto Gate system, which autonomously processes trucks without ILA labor... Maersk Line has a track record of pushing automation. They started semi-automation in the Port of Hampton Roads, and have full automation at Pier 400 in Los Angeles, California. The ILA lost tens of thousands of jobs in the 1970s due to containerization, and APM and Maersk seem to be leading the charge to eliminate good, family-sustaining jobs right here in the U.S.” The power of the unions in US port operations. https://lnkd.in/gtStgxZU
