Last week I had the pleasure of attending Fast Company's Innovation Summit. I always love this show as it offers the opportunity to engage with so many different industries outside the echo chamber of travel/ hospitality. Here are a few takeaways: - SCARF Model and Leadership: I do love an acronym-- and The SCARF model (Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, Fairness) helps leaders create positive, collaborative environments by minimizing threats and maximizing engagement with clients and staff. A good one to note. - Mental Health Starts at the Top: Leadership plays a key role in promoting mental health at work, with companies like IKEA prioritizing sleep and work-life balance. Offering mental health days and fostering in-person connections helps attract talent and improve employee well-being. We're certainly seeing this at LDPR, and I'm proud of the work we're continuing to do here. - Ah, another AI term to wrap my head around. Case in point, Synthetic Respondents in Market Research: AI-generated Synthetic Respondents simulate consumer behavior, allowing for faster, more accurate market research by analyzing vast amounts of data and eliminating human biases. - Who's heard of Tubi? Tubi gives influencers a platform to share content freely, reaching diverse audiences through its ad-supported streaming service, offering creative freedom and monetization opportunities. - Was reminded why I love my MZ Wallace bags during an intimate chat with founders @MonicaZwirner and @LucyWallaceEustice. - Gen Alpha Observations: Gen Alpha is highly tech-savvy, entrepreneurial, socially aware, and financially influential, but also faces mental health challenges. They care deeply about diversity, sustainability, and balancing career and life. - I don't know that I'm using Google Trends enough? Google Trends offers real-time insights into online searches, helping businesses track trends, optimize content, and refine marketing strategies based on consumer interests. - Japanese Culture's Influence: Anime’s surge in popularity is driving global interest in Japanese culture, influencing entertainment, fashion, and lifestyle trends, particularly through platforms like Netflix and Crunchyroll. - I wasn't aware of TikTok 's "off of phone" initiative. TikTok’s IRL screens bring online content into public spaces, enhancing user engagement and blending digital and physical interactions in malls, gyms, and cafes. - Tech & Human Connection, Agile Leadership: Tech should enhance human connection, while leaders must embrace agility, fostering empathy, adaptability, and resilience to navigate today’s fast-changing landscape.

How can you jazz up your publicity efforts this week? Perhaps you can tie your brand into one of these trends — or gain some inspiration for a new product or package at your hotel or travel company. It’s not even officially summer yet, but the SEASON’S OFFICIAL “IT” MEAL has already emerged in New York City — and it’s actually not as new and innovative as you would expect. This is going to be the SUMMER OF HIGHER FEES — we’re talking plenty of new tourist entry fees as well as higher hotel taxes in many cities. Even Greece is looking to tack on hotel fees which they are chalking up to “climate crisis resilience fees” to steel itself against climate disasters like last year’s wildfires. OVER-THE-TOP BURGERS are still creating a lot of media buzz and the price tag on this one is pretty hefty. LEISURE TRAVEL IS WANING, but there is some good news as other travel sectors are rebounding. Super interesting study from Patino Associates shared by Eleanor Hawkins in the Axios Communicators newsletter this week (h/t to the wonderful Lauren Myers-Cavanagh for putting me onto the newsletter!). 66% of Chief Comms Officers in Fortune 500 companies are women, substantially higher than any other C-Suite role. On the latest episode of the Happy at Work podcast, Tessa and Laura spoke with Stacey Messier, General Manager of CIC (Cambridge Innovation Center) New England, about the evolving expectations around in-office environments. Stacey shared an insightful perspective: "It used to be 2016, it was snacks. Snacks! Free lunch! Free lunch every day! People are gonna be amazed! We are... out of the land of basic amenities. Now, that has become the expectation." She emphasized that companies need to go beyond just providing basic amenities and focus on offering meaningful content and experiences that will truly engage and retain their employees. This could include things like speaker series, community discussions, and employee resource group initiatives. How do you know you’re the OG of Public Relations leaders on LinkedIn ? When your LI profile is old enough to order a dry martini at the Tadich Grill in San Francisco 🍸 Cheers to me, I guess? LinkedIn officially launched on May 5, 2003. It was just a glorified Rolodex at that point, or so I thought. Founder Reid Hoffman disabused me of that notion face-to-face. I’ll never forget it. Or how stupid I was about this platform. I was VP marketing at SHIFT Communications back then, and I pitched LinkedIn’s PR business 2x. Came in 2nd both times. 🫠 I think it was because Reid had a vision for this platform that was far bigger than most of us were prepared to imagine. Me included. I didn’t do shit here until the pandemic tbh. That’s when I started posting my thoughts about the tech PR industry daily as I started my own PR agency, Crackle PR. People gave me a hard time about that, not gonna lie. “Don’t you have a day job?” “Do you just like to hear yourself talk?” 🙄 But it took me more than 20 years to see what Mr. Hoffman saw waaaaay back when we met. In the past few years I’ve shared everything I know about my industry. I’ve ungated my brain, for free, for anyone willing to listen, and I’ve asked for nothing in return except your attention, your conversation, your readership, your kinship. And I’ve built a bustling PR agency doing millions of dollars in ARR without doing ANY outbound marketing. None. Ever. I’ve built a killer team without ever needing a recruiter. Because all of the business, all of the revenue, all of my talented people came inbound to Crackle from LinkedIn. Because I use this incredible platform to build in public. Openly, transparently, authentically. That’s what Reid Hoffman saw back then —and a cocky young punk like me couldn’t even wrap my head around it: It’s called Social selling. 🌟 And once you finally see it, you can’t unsee it. This is the most powerful social platform on planet earth, and it’s just getting started. I’ll drink to that 🍻 This is the way ✊

Recently spoke with Authority Magazine about how Stomping Ground Strategies is disrupting the PR industry by being unafraid, prizing diversity and creating a positive work environment that doesn't sacrifice people in the name of profit. Thinking about what is means to be a female vs. male disruptor, I struggled to find the right words that weren't cliché GirlBoss mumbo jumbo. Ultimately, for me it comes down to empathy, something we sorely need more of at the present moment. "...many more of us are looking for ways to achieve success without undercutting others or working our employees to the bone. When your business model is ruthless, you don’t have to do a lot of emotional labor, but when your business model has even a modicum of balance, you find yourself naturally practicing empathy, which is important, but still taxing at the end of the day." https://lnkd.in/gXAP8ACs

I have and I've done it enough times (with the benefit of time AND without) that I created an outline of what I need to know or find out in order to be able to build a solid and strategic plan. Love this - and another thing to consider: Good writers (i.e. comms pros) can be the Swiss Army Knife in a company's marketing toolkit. "Why is marketing coming under communications and not the other way around?... By aligning with communications, marketers are better equipped to protect and promote the company’s brand... So communicators must lead by crafting clear messaging that aligns with company strategy, and marketers should use those narratives to attract the widest audience.
